Love Bites?

Friends, you guessed it -- that's the iconic kiss between Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev and East German President Erich Honecker in 1979.  It's symbolic of the awkward embrace between the USSR and East Germany, which took its most tangible and historically ominous form in their joint membership in the Warsaw Pact, a military alliance that rivaled our NATO.  Well, in today's Newsmaker Show, Brian and I tackle the termination of the Warsaw Pact in March 1991, along with many other intriguing historical developments, including: the construction of the Eiffel Tower, Spain's expulsion of the Jews in 1492 and the history of European anti-Semitism, the reign of Oliver Cromwell in England, the long battle over Irish "home rule" and the future of Northern Ireland in the age of Brexit, and the extent of public support for Britain's (socialized) "National Health Service".

Believe it or not, we also tackle some current events, including: China's deceptive PR on green energy, the threat China poses to its neighbors, and the notable constancy in US-China and US-Russia relations, despite occasionally hot political rhetoric.  We also discuss Cuomo's ongoing travails with women accusing him of inappropriate behavior, and his wily survival strategy.

Man, oh man!  What a lineup.  Only a crazy person wouldn't listen to such an informative show, am I right???

In other news, bankruptcy gets a little closer every day!

And, in case you had any doubt, even the WaPo agrees that Biden's claims about Georgia's election integrity reforms are bogus:

Great news!  There will be soon be a lot more potheads in New York State!  In other words, Cuomo's reelection committee is about to get a big shot in the arm.  Meanwhile, the mayor of my hometown, Rochester, New York, is proposing that marijuana revenues be used to fund reparations.  Man, we truly do live in the best of all possible worlds...

We could soon see the reemergence of Trump rallies!  That would be a huge relief to CNN and MSNBC, which have missed Trump (hatred) terribly.  Heaven knows nobody's tuning in to watch Biden mumble his way through a speech.

In its ongoing effort to embody the spirit of Big Brother, Facebook won't allow anything "in the voice of Trump" on its platform(s).  What a mockery of democracy and free speech!  FB ought to be ashamed.

Finally, you'll be pleased to learn that the flag of transgenderism is flying proudly over the White House!  Really, though, shouldn't there be separate flags for L, and G, and B, and T, and Q, and...whatever else the Left is celebrating these days?  In addition, surely we can't forget the BLM flag, and there ought to be a flag to fete Asians as well (just, for the love of all that's holy, don't make it yellow!).  Oy.  When will the virtue signalling stop???

  1. Well, at least the, "reparations," will mostly be pot refunds in that case!

  2. Dr.Waddy from Jack: Here again is what I think China thinks: " We do not share your conviction that coal smoke is a significant, maybe decisive factor in ostensible human generated "global warming". "Your convictions tothe contrary do not move us since we ( of course) recognize their Marxist presumptuousnes". (Dr. Waddy, I do not presume this myself but I suggest the Chinese, as savaged as they were by commies, might see it that way.

  3. Indeed, Lee! If the Left thinks that abolishing the police and making the world safe for potheads is the key to a renaissance in the black community, I think we can safely assume that black America is destined for terminal decline.

Jack, what the average Chinese person thinks about coal, I haven't a clue, but the Chinese government admits that coal and resulting carbon emissions are a big problem. They have a grand plan to fix the problem too...which involves more coal before it involves less coal. Simply put, they insist on having their cake and eating it too. And why not? The world gives them a pass, after all.

  4. Dr.Waddy from Jack: I should not have suggested that the Chinese do not see coal as pollutionbut rather that they have plausible doubts about human generation of ostensible global warmingThey may not considerit wise to endanger their miraculous economic surge by adopting possibly ill considered solutions to a problem which may not exist and its advocacy a political power play. They will never trust the West.

  5. Dr. Waddy from Jack: Great nations like China often exercise spheres of influence which, though surely meant in national self interest, sometimes benefit neighboring nations by doing so. Didn't U.S. assertion of such in the Caribbean and Latin America prevent European totalitarian, first doctrine and then real threat, from invading? It is the South China Sea after all, it surrounds what they consider "their" Taiwan and they may see it as a Chinese lake much as we see the Caribbean. If they were making a show of force, it may have been against us. Even in the '60s, when I served in the Western Pacific, war game scenarios with which we were presented envisioned Chinese nuclear attacks on U.S. bases in the Philippines. Restored military cooperation between the U.S. and the Phillipines has been recently proposed.

  6. Dr. Wwddy from Jack: It would be best to have the Philippines clarify the term "maritime militia". Does it mean forces capable of amphibious land combat? Such would, in such numbers, present a greater threat than a naval surface and air demonstration.

  7. Dr.Waddy from Jack: Slick Andy, ever the player! He has worked that way forever and probably could not function otherwise. "Deenah, deenah, deenah, baibee". Our relatively well ordered political system does protect us from abrupt , arbitrary change but it necessitates our enduring bad cases in office too long.

  8. Dr.Waddy from Jack: I wonder if the Warsaw Pact countries would have stuck with the Soviets during a Nato - Russia War? Probably so, I suppose: if the Soviets won they would be no worse off; if Nato won they would be free. (?)

  9. Dr.Waddy from Jack: I had not heard of N. Ireland's perhaps having a choice to make between the EU and the UK. Along with still significant sentiment fro independence in Scotland, it does present a plausible but still astonishing prospect of the breakup of the UK. I'm very glad that England is free of incipient EU bureaucratic, leftist presumptuousness. England has a superior civilization (at least historically) and they were right to tpprotect it.I was in Parliament Square, right in front of 1000 year old Westminster Hall, in Jan. 2019 during a major "exit means exit" demonstration. It wasn't the first time I had seen personally realized history in that very place. It was a thrill! If Scotland and N. Ireland wish to depart, I hope for the best for them but I fear for it. The "Sceptered Isle" will be fine all the while, well I wot.

  10. Hmm. My impression, Jack, is that the Chinese mouth all the right platitudes about global warming. They don't deny its reality, so much as they suggest that the rich countries of the West should bear most of the burden of mitigating it. And we, being idiots, happily agree!

Could a Chinese sphere of influence ultimately make the world a better, safer place? Almost certainly yes. Our forces are "forward deployed" to almost every corner of the globe, and that aggressive posture may be both unsustainable and provocative. Funnily enough, a Chinese invasion of Taiwan, in response to which we wag our fingers and do little else, might be the quickest way to remake the world order along more sensible lines... It could also kill us all. Nothing ventured, nothing gained!

That's a great question, Jack: would the Soviets have been able to count on Warsaw Pact backup in case of actual war? Such a war could have taken so many shapes, but my take is that, once the bullets start flying, one tends to line up neatly AGAINST whomever is shooting at...one. Of course, it's also hard to imagine that conventional forces would have counted for much in such a conflict.

Jack, I would be bitterly opposed to the breakup of the U.K. -- and so is its Parliament, at least as far as I know. So long as Parliament doesn't allow a vote on dissolution, and there's no good reason why it should, the question will be moot.
