Friends, "democracy" is one of the most popular terms in political discourse these days (and has been ever since 1776), but its meaning is surprisingly slippery. The amusing analysis below points out that leftists love "democracy", but they aren't quite sure that the people can be trusted to take charge of it -- which is to say, they like their "democracy" from the top down.

Meanwhile, check out this A.P. story, which is a shining example of the absolute contempt that the Fourth Estate has for democracy in action. In a nutshell, a Florida judge has struck down the (admittedly gerrymandered) Congressional redistricting plan approved by Florida's legislature and its Governor Ron DeSantis. The story does not contextualize this development in any way, except to describe it as symptomatic of Republican racism and skullduggery. What context is missing? Well, who is this Florida judge, and what are the chances that the State Supreme Court will uphold his ruling? Answer: he's nobody, and he ain't going to be upheld. Do Republicans gerrymander in a vacuum, or, perhaps, has any blue state ever engaged in the same practice, and, if so, has the A.P. ever cared one bit about it? These questions answer themselves. More to the point of this post, the A.P. never considers the obvious problem that the current redistricting plan became law because the people of Florida elected the current legislature, and the current Governor! That's called, last time I checked, "democracy", but the LAST thing the A.P. would want is for a Republican legislature and a Republican Governor to govern, because that wouldn't be, you guessed it, "democratic", would it? Uh huh. Sure. I hope the existing map remains in force, because it advantages Republicans, yes, but also because it's the kind of political order that the people of Florida voted for. And, if they don't like it, well, they can elect Andrew Gillum as their Governor next time, can't they?
Dr. Waddy fromJack: Yeah but then marxists in power have often made cynical use of the word democracy. eg. "Democratic Republic of. . . ." Say, I wonder what name american commies intend for a democratic republic forced on us? Why, Utopia of course. And since authorThomas More advocated immolation of heretics, all that much the better. Its said that marxists describe freedom as being free from the myriad injustices they blithely define; this counter to the belief we have in being free to do what we want. Their definition assumes their dictatorship, just as does their corrupted version of democracy.
ReplyDeleteDr. Waddy from Jack: NY recently underwent a similar but more prolonged evolution of gerrymandering , charge and countercharge in court and mediation which, counterintuitively, has resulted so far in a strengthened NY GOP delegation which may have enabled
ReplyDeletethe GOP House majority. Of course the autocratic NY dems, stung by this ironic and unimaginable injustice, are back in court seeking to put matters right (so to speak). I think unless we fundamentally transform our democracy we will always have this dynamic at work. For Florida to be represented by a majority dem delegation would require chicanery; that state appears to have rejoined the ranks of those of common sense and should be represented as such in Congress
Dr. Waddy from Jack: " Heads we win, tails you lose. That's only fair because for us to lose is by definition, grossly unjust! Once you understand that, you'll feel better. " So says the antiamerican left; they may even believe it.
ReplyDeleteDr.Waddy from Jack: Right now Trump nation is HIGHLY motivated by resentment of the antiamerican left's ersatz legal ad hominem onslaught on DJT. Should he be run out I would expect that left's well honed totalitarian machine to be turned on DeSantis. That, together with his already demonstrated antiwoke principles, should bring Trump nation to his support. In office, he would be true to America and steadfastly counter the "fundamental transformation" we do not need.
ReplyDeleteTrue, Jack, the bastardization of "democracy" and "freedom" are certainly not new developments, and the perversion of the English language is equally a time-honored tradition. We were lucky to have lived in a time when these words were treated with a little reverence, and defined with partial accuracy. Very few people, historically, have been as blessed.
ReplyDeleteYou're right, Jack, that the judicial interference in NYS redistricting that worked to the advantage of the GOP was a small miracle that will probably never be repeated, since going forward the purpose of all redistricting, in the People's Republic of America, will be to deny Republicans and conservatives representation of any kind, or at least of any meaningful scope. I predict roughly 430 Congressional districts within the city limits of New York, L.A., Chicago, and San Francisco, and 5 for the rest of us.
Jack, I'm not sure what the Left can do to "run out" Trump before the 2024 election itself, and I'm pretty sure they wouldn't want to. The 14th Amendment gambit is just for show. They want Trump as the candidate, ESPECIALLY if he's behind bars, because they intend for him to lose. Doesn't mean they'll get their wish, but that's the roadmap they appear to be working off of.
Dr.Waddy from Jack: That the antiamerican left wants a DJT in grave legal jeopardy , as candidate, makes sense. But polling shows Biden running unfavorably against DJT just now. Do they purpose a candidate other than Biden? Do they think that DJT's prospective felonious disabilities will give them a legal cover to attempt to deny office to an elected DJT? We are living through important history!
ReplyDeleteGood questions! Does the Left ascribe so much political weight to its bogus prosecutions of Trump that it shrugs unconcernedly at the present polls? That's hard to believe. Easier to believe, I think, is the idea that the Left knows that, if 91 felony charges don't suffice, they've got plenty more in the tank, both within and beyond the justice system, to ensure that Trump never again occupies the Oval Office.
