Keep Calm and Soldier On

Friends, I'll be analyzing the midterm results in a lot more detail in the next day or two, but suffice it to say that I still see a very viable path to Republican control of the House and the Senate, and those were our two main goals in this cycle.  Granted, the "red wave" fizzled, and we're not seeing America turn to the right with the alacrity that we wanted and expected.  Be that as it may, we should still be in a position to frustrate Biden's agenda over the next two years.  What's more, there's a very important silver lining to the Democrats' perception that they were the "winners" last night.  Their self-satisfaction will take the wind out of the sails of the movement to dump Biden in 2024.  The best thing that could happen to the Republican Party is a Biden candidacy in 2024.  So I say: pat yourself on the back Sleepy Joe.  You're doing a bang-up job!

While you're ruminating on the midterm results, don't neglect the exit polls, which include a lot of fascinating data:

While I resolutely reject the idea that Republicans should despair over last night's results, the fact is that there are warning signs for 2024, including Donald Trump's enduring lack of popularity with many key demographics, as well as what seems to be a budding feud between Trump and the midterms' biggest Republican victor, Ron DeSantis.  Trump is trying to warn off DeSantis from running.  Will it work?  We may not know for a long while.  If I were DeSantis, I'd wait to see how the Department of Justice is going to play things...

I'm sure you realize that being for DeSantis does not mean that one is against Trump. However, I think that common sense at this point means that Trump needs to realize that his day his over, and he needs to fade into the background. Of course with his enormous ego this will be very difficult for him to do. If he fails to do it, the "force of politics' will take care of it for him. The same goes for Biden. In any event, DeSantis is the wave of the future in a 2024 Republican presidential race. DeSantis would be well advised if he picks a strong woman as his VP, and someone who will stay with him for 8 years, and then run on her own.

  2. Dr.Wardy from Jack: In the morning I was down but now I see alot of positives. The House is a virtual mathematical certainty and the Senate is within reach. Ohio and Florida, both terribly important states in Presidential elections, came through big. Vance won creditably and DeSantis has become an enormous asset in his personal thumb in the eye of wokeism and his no doubt major role in turning Florida bright red. The ridiculous candidacies of the twin zeros, "beto" and princess Stacy were good to see: Georgia took a step back toward common sense and away from blue rot and Walker may yet rush for office; Texas gave presumptuous beto to understand that it is still TEXAS and has no time for a gleeful gun grabber. CA and NY are still the best argument for an electoral college. We may not have won by a KO but we took the decision. It tickles me to see dems gloat today; I even endured msnbc for a time. And a big frickin A to your observation that a for now less damaged Pino Biden is just what we need to run against in '24. Let us be of good cheer; even more good fortune could be at hand!

  3. Dr.Waddy from Jack: Oh yeah too, our redistricted Congressional district, will be truly represented. No more Ithaca (home of Cornell reeducation camp) types thinking they can teach us a lesson. We are real America down here despite being behind enemy lines. Its refreshing to know that such as Schumer do not define us.

  4. Trump's initial reaction to DeSantis' growing popularity, sung to the tune of "Camptown Races":

"Trump got his feeings hurt, Doo-dah! doo-dah!"
"Trump got his feelings hurt, Oh doo-dah day"

  5. Dr. Waddy from Jack: And even if we don't get the Senate, Manchin and Sinema will still be there, to plague the Dems even unto roaring. If only one or both of them would come in from the cold. . .

  6. Fair enough, Ray -- a lot of Republicans admire Trump on some levels, and appreciate his service to the nation, but would still prefer new blood in '24. Is that "common sense"? I dunno. There's nothing common about sense, in my experience. But you're right: Trump will only go kicking and screaming...

Jack, that is an outstanding summary of our victories and sundry consolation prizes in '22! It wasn't such a bad year, after all. The Grand Old Party is alive and well and positioned superbly to surge to victory in 2024. And I agree: the stakes through the respective hearts of Beto and Stacey were profoundly gratifying. Still, it would have been nice to see a few leftist taking heads shed a tear or two, wouldn't it? Alas, they're more emboldened than chastened.

As for the Senate, I'm feeling less and less optimistic. Arizona has been called for the Dems (if a bit hastily), and Nevada seems to trend more and more blue by the day, as it did in the counting in 2020. If we lose those two, then Schumer can keep pushing through neo-Marxist judges galore. That's a bitter pill to swallow.
