Friends, finally a post that isn't about Donald Trump! Well, I say that, but in fact Easter and the Resurrection are about all of us, including Trump, and the promise that God's grace holds for us. May the "good news" infuse the hearts and minds of every one of you, on this day and every day! God bless.
RAY TO NICK
ReplyDeleteThanks for the Easter Greeting. The artwork is very Catholic.
And let us not forget that "Liberalism Is a Sin" according to a 19th Century Catholic priest.
Dr. Waddy from Jack: Its an indescribably sublime story, hallowed by the faith of billions over time and though I am a very unprofessional historian I would venture to say that belief in it is the fundamental theme of Western civilization. To casually deny it today is catastrophically presumptuous, as our morally undermined world today strongly suggests. It has
ReplyDeletebeen subjected to more arduous, principled criticism, introspection and debate than any aspect of our history. Terrible mistakes have been made and learned from, in its name. It has informed the lives of very great persons like Saint John Paul II and Mother Theresa; IT LIVES and graces the lives of multitudes. Its celebration is so richly merited and redeeming.
RAY TO JACK
DeleteTrue, but don't forget that Western Civilization (a catch all term for Europe) is the epicenter for two World Wars, and numerous wars all over the globe. This is not a left-wing or right-wing view, it is a FACT!
Happy Resurrection Day Dr. Waddy! And to all those who post here. John 11:25
ReplyDeleteThank you Nick for reminding us all of the most important day in the history of the world.
ReplyDeleteHappy Easter, Ray! Hey, who are you calling "Catholic"? I keep my popery to the bare minimum, I'll have you know. The Victorian Catholics were right about (classical) liberalism, though. It's a gateway drug to all kinds of wickedness.
ReplyDeleteJack, I agree with you that Christendom lies at the heart of Western Civilization. I also agree with Ray that to acknowledge this actually tells us very little, because Christianity has been harnessed to support so many creeds, ideologies, and agendas over 2,000 years, that assessing its historical legacy is downright excruciating.
Happy Easter, Richie! Thanks for the excellent Bible verse. I like to keep my Christianity good and simple, personally, and it doesn't get any clearer and easier to understand than John 11:25!
Happy Easter, Carole! Wow. I think this is your first official comment on the blog. You are most welcome, needless to say. You'll find plenty of believers here. You're in good company!
Dr. Waddy from Jack: Perhaps the fundamental question is: has Western Civilisation been, on balance ,a positive phenomenom? If Chrstianity is its moral essence then the answer informs an evaluation of Christianity. In my opinion the answer is yes, again on balance.
ReplyDeleteJack, I think there's no question that Western Civilization and Christianity have been blessings to mankind. Without the West, and its Christian moral compass, most of the world would not enjoy the freedoms, opportunities, and material comforts that it does. Sadly, few are willing to admit this obvious truth -- and Westerners and Christians seem no more willing to acknowledge it than Chinese commissars.
