Kavanaugh in the Crosshairs

Friends, my latest Newsmaker interview with Brian O'Neil focuses, not surprisingly, on the unfolding drama of the Brett Kavanaugh confirmation battle.  My instincts told me that more accusers would come out of the woodwork, and they sure have!  Judge Kavanaugh's observation that we've entered a political "Twilight Zone" is not far off the mark.  You know that, when Michael Avenatti gets involved, things are bound to get even uglier...

Will Dr. Ford show up for the hearings tomorrow?  That remains to be seen, but if she does it will be political theater of the first order.  Nonetheless, I still believe that, when the dust settles, Kavanaugh will be on the court.  In the meantime, all I can say is that I feel sorry for his wife and daughters, who must be truly disgusted with the way that the Washington swamp is treating a man who was, by all accounts prior to the last few weeks, a model of integrity and decency.  What a country we inhabit, eh?

  1. Dr. Waddy: I think we inhabit a country infected, perhaps fatally, by a doctrine introduced to us by Stalinists and hosted by a decisive faction of the gargantuan baby boom generation. Inherent in this belief is an anti intellectual presumption of unassailable correctness and justice which conveniently frees its adherents from the sanctions of traditional sympathy, empathy, morality and concern for due process. It is yet again manifested in the effort to derail Judge Kavanaugh's nomination in a way eloquently and accurately denounced by Sen. Graham yesterday.

You asked, (rhetorically I would guess) "why did we go through this process when Dems already knew of the accusations?". The Dems were simply biding their time.

Were Paula Jones and Juanita Broaddrick afforded anything approaching the deference shown to Dr. Ford? That they were not justifies a two "word" reply to the Dems' summary condemnation of Judge Kavanaugh: William Clinton. If I were on that Committee its the only thing I'd say to them.

I certainly agree with you in that this execrable experience may cause high turnout in the midterms. I hope the real America does just what it did in 2016, when it knew full well how very much was at stake.

Are we in another Civil War? Yes. The profound present mutual hostility has been very much exacerbated by the last month's developments and the prospect of what may be in store. Consider the looks on the faces of Sen. Graham and Judge Kavanaugh yesterday. Our side is stung to the quick. A reckoning is almost guaranteed

"Words" having become a police priority in the birthplace of parliaments and the necessary freedom of expression parliaments embrace, is a grave development and it must be confronted here. You were right to cite American "universities" (eg. I suggest, SUNY New Paltz) as telling examples of this metastisizing totalitarian malignancy.

Re: the recent assault on Senator Cruz: What we are seeing now on the part of the left is direct and personal confrontation indicative of desperation on the part of the left and, perhaps a warmup for terrorism as it faces final defeat. '60's New Leftists didn't know from politics and though they had an onerous effect it was only because of their overwhelming multitude. Today's left, having tried and perhaps failed in conventional politics, is approaching a fatal leap into vindictive insanity. You are right, the Inquisition will continue.

  2. Dr. Waddy: Sen. Jeff Flake - the RINOs revenge. Their day is over but he's blithe to provide us one more taste of RINO spinelessness. Can you imagine any Dem doing that? (c'mon, do it,Joe Manchin). They long ago got the taste of blood and have their eyes firmly on the jugular. RINOS like Flake are like Lord Halifax, who would if he could have surrendered the British fleet to the Nazis,(because it was the right thing to do, after all, they had surrendered their's post WWI). Churchill, on the other hand, made haste to blast the French fleet, knowing the Nazis would use it. I look for President Trump to make a power move soon.

  3. Jack, your "warmup for terrorism" remark may be spot on, I'm sad to say. The people who believe that ambushing and yelling at Republicans is the epitome of nobility are ripe for taking the next step, especially if 2018 denies them their "blue wave".

I take a different view of Flake's machinations, however. I don't think the FBI investigation is likely to do any harm, and it may well do some good, in that it takes away a Democratic talking point and will cloak Kavanaugh's eventual confirmation in something resembling legitimacy. Personally, I think Democrats made a mistake in making "Allow an FBI investigation!" their rallying cry. It's easily done, and changes nothing, except that it makes Republicans look reasonable, and will confirm that Ford's claims are not provable or consistent with Kavanaugh's known behavior.

  4. Dr. Waddy: Your view is plausible and I hope it is borne out, either in Kavanaugh's confirmation or in the seating of another nominee enabled by the real America's outrage over leftist intransigence and totalitarian conviction.
