Friends, could the gold-hued and mega-Trumpy thousand dollar bill become a reality? I wouldn't bet on it, but the economic wins that Trump has racked up since taking office are impressive. Just a few months ago, the media and the Dems were telling us that a recession was a virtual certainty, and now? Now the markets are surging, inflation is cooling, and all the hubbub about tariffs seems totally overblown. No one can guarantee four solid years of prosperity, but we're off to a fine start, which must aggravate lefties to no end!
Can you believe how unhinged the Left's reaction to the cancellation of the Late Show with Stephen Colbert has been??? First of all, the influence of late night comedy shows is infinitesimal, compared to what it was in Johnny Carson's heyday. Second of all, Trump's critics don't have a constitutional right to unlimited airtime. I mean, grow up! Sometimes shows get cancelled. Life goes on. I have no doubt that Mr. Colbert will land on his feet, and that his fellow progressives will take good care of him. If not, he has his millions of dollars to bring him solace... What will CBS replace him with? Reruns of I Love Lucy, if they know what's good for them. As for Molly Ringwald's suggestion that Stephen Colbert should run for president, I couldn't agree more! That's exactly what the Dems need: an out-of-touch, sanctimonious Hollywood insider as their standard-bearer. But maybe Steve would rather run as a third party candidate? Even better!!! Bring it on, Bolshies!
RAY TO DR. WADDY
ReplyDeleteInstead of "I Love Lucy", how about reruns of "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet".
Dr. Waddy from Jack: The economy; its the victory of common sense over dreams, brought about by a President with the guts to assert it. He knows that it is counterproductive for government to try to run it. Rather, its vital to have faith in its productivity when it is mainly left to its own devices. Yes, history shows we must curb capitalism and free enterprise's darker side but that, so tempered, it will afford an almost universal standard of living far beyond the ken and the hopes of the very wisest thinkers of preceding centuries. Oh yes, there are those who say our economy does not guarantee well being to all, but they are discredited by the demonstrated fact that those who are willing to work this economy can prosper if they WILL. Of course there are many who are persuaded by well meaning but counterproductive government largesse that they are entitled to complete financial support with no productive input from them.
ReplyDeleteDr. Waddy from Jack: Lefties are blithe to profit from free enterprise and effort marshalled by those whose assets and energy make it work. But when its inexorable laws may work their disruption or discredititation, why then they hold the entire economic system to be at oppressive fault. They came close to murderously imposing this view on the world, including the U.S.
ReplyDeleteDr.Waddy from Jack: if we think that the ascension of DJT to the Presidency and his obvious competence opened the Presidential door to many others beyond the customary run of politicians and (once upon a time) Generals, well! The Dems , through sagacious representatives like Molly Ringwald (oh yeah, her) and Jeff Daniels(who I like nevertheless for his excellent portrayals of Civil War hero Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain), are considering some imaginative candidates. They might as well at this point.Their desperation and their degradation lend a comic aspect to this phenomenon. Lets make them some suggestions:
ReplyDeleteHow about Walz or Newsom? No, really folks: Rachel Maddow, Phil Dona"hew", MIchael Moore,Angela Davis, the former President of Harvard, one of the many unemployed pollsters from recent years, a frantic garrulous bartender (oh yeah, there is one running already), how about that administrator from PBS who so unrelenting
Dr. Waddy from Jack: . . . ingly and righteously protested the principled objectivity of her agency before Congress, how 'bout the Head of the American Library Association, who is renowned for her advocacy of ideological fairness in publicly supported libraries or. . . well you get the idea. How about me? My idol is Boris Yeltsin and like him, I would abolish my own party. Additions to this pantheon are encouraged . . .
ReplyDeleteDr. Waddy from Jack: There are two perhaps initially unlikely people who I do think could make good candidates for eventual higher office: Peyton Manning and Shaquille O'Neal. I don't know what their political stands may be but both are well spoken, have graceful and likeable public personalities and both were proven in their sports careers to be outstanding leaders in exceptionally challenging professions. Congress or Governorships might be within their reach and beyond that . . . .
ReplyDeleteIt isn't possible now because of modern technology but during the Civil War, on both sides, several men with no military experience were made or swiftly moved up to General's rank. Amazingly, a few of them became superb Generals. Confederate John Gordon and Union Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain were two of the best examples. Some people just have the right stuff.
I think we can now plausibly say there are probably several Americans outside of politics who would make good Presidents. I'd like to see outstanding military or law enforcement officers included in that list.
Ray, I'm not personally acquainted with Ozzie and Harriet, so I couldn't say. You prefer them?
ReplyDeleteJack, reducing senseless regulation will certainly benefit many sectors of the economy, and the Big, Beautiful Bill should too, but there's an element of blind luck to the business cycle as well, and Trump may benefit from some of that blind luck, in the form of A.I., in particular. it has pluses and minuses, but it's almost guaranteed to boost productivity, and that's the name of the game if you want economic growth...
Ha! You're right. The Dems might as well think outside the box for 2028, because what they've got inside the box is mostly pretty revolting. Perhaps that's an exaggeration, because there are some level-headed, articulate moderates in the party, but it's an open question whether any of them could get near the presidential nomination, because all the energy on the Left is on the FAR left. Long may it last!
You forgot Oprah. When the Dems really get desperate, they start fantasizing about Oprah. Enough said!
Jack, I would be careful about assuming that people, especially actors or sportsmen, with likeable personas would make good presidents. There's a reason most decent folk stay away from politics. It's an ugly business, and it can make Mr. Nice Guy look like Mr. Felonious Weirdo in a heartbeat. Unless someone has been put through the ringer before, you really have no idea how they'll fare.
Dr. Waddy from Jack: But actor Ronald Reagan made a fine President, of course after much seasoning in lesser positions. Also, from what I've read and heard, the intensely competitive playing field in professional sports can be a very hostile, trying and even dangerous setting.Imagine the pounding and the derogation a pro QB or an NBA center takes. Such experience, especially over years, maybe a telling test of character.
ReplyDeleteNevertheless, you are well taken in urging caution in evaluating the prospects of such people.
RAY TO DR. WADDY
DeleteI DO NOT prefer Ozzie and Harriet. Was just joking. I was watching a documentary on popular TV shows back in the 1950s, and just happen to run across them. I think they had a Son Ricky (spelling?), who was also a popular singer for a while.
Dr. Waddy from Jack: "Ozzie and Harriet" along with "Leave it to Beaver" and the "Burns and Allen" show accurately portrayed a lifestyle widely enjoyed in "50s and early '60s. I grew up on a blue collar street in an otherwise quite well to do suburb and I am very familiar with that setting.
ReplyDeleteIts good to remember also that the adults in these shows were all veterans of the harrowing '30s and ' 40s (Beaver's father Ward Cleaver for example was a WWII combat survivor; he occasionally mentioned it). And this was less than 20 years after the Depression, in which some Americans had starved to death. I think for those adults who enjoyed these shows, that grim reality was always nonetheless somewhere on their minds.
That's one factor which makes these shows stand in such favorable contrast to their "relevant" '60s inspired successor "All in the Family", with the detestable and unrelenting scorn it displayed for WWII vet working man Archie Bunker. Its mostly favorable portrayal of his dependent but yet ungrateful boomer son in law, played very sincerely by still insolent Rob Reiner, was a harbinger of the leftist "relevance" which motivated so many more shows after that.
Dr. Waddy from Jack: I do not agree with Oprah, judging by the scanty experiences I have of her exposition. But I was very impressed with the calm and reasoning manner in which she counseled Amy Fisher on her show for Fisher's expressions of regret for her vicious deed . She told Fisher , with frankness and firmness ,that she had a very long process of continued and credible demonstration ahead of her in proving true remorse and that she (Oprah) had strong doubts that Fisher could do it. Oprah was quite well spoken on that occasion.
ReplyDeleteRonald Reagan first gained serious attention with an eloquent public performance at the '64 GOP convention.
I'd suggest Oprah might make a formidable candidate.
Jack, no doubt Reagan was a fine president, and we've had some sportsmen become credible public servants too, but these are pretty rare exceptions to the general rule that effective politicians are usually tight-lipped lawyerly types. If you ask me, it's a big risk to nominate anyone for high office who hasn't already won several elections before and proven capable of steady leadership, as opposed to fabricating hot air.
ReplyDeleteQuite a wide cultural gulf separates the family friendly programming of the 50s from the leftist tripe of the early 70s onwards. Eek! Life sometimes imitates art, which in turn imitates life. This is what happens when leftist weirdos are allowed to control the entertainment industry!!!
