Ukraine and Russia: Attached at the Hip?

Friends, a lot of this week's Newsmaker Show reflects on the close historical and cultural ties between Ukraine and Russia, and asks how wise it is for the West to interfere in that relationship or to try to safeguard Ukrainian independence.  Twice in the 20th century, conflict between Russia and the West (namely Germany) created an opportunity for Ukraine to break free (briefly) from Russian overlordship.  Both times, once circumstances quieted down, Russia tightened its grip and Ukrainian sovereignty was forfeit.  Could history repeat itself in 2022?  Maybe.  Is there any great reason in the West for us to care?  None that I can think of.  We have bigger fish to fry, as American and Western power declines precipitously, in global terms, and China nips at our heels and makes a play for world domination.  My take?  The future of Ukraine is hardly worth fretting about.

In addition to the Russia-Ukraine brouhaha, Brian and I tackle the rapid pivot in blue states away from COVID mandates, the RNC's decision to censure Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger (and the meager political capital the Dems have earned to date from exploitation of the January 6th "insurrection"), the symbolic confrontation between American and Russian power in Venezuela, the rising tide of Biden skepticism on the Left (and where it may lead), and how to tell if someone is a "communist".

Sounds mighty stimulating to me!  Listen in and judge for yourself:

In other news, here is RNC chairwoman Ronna McDaniel's outstanding refutation of media attacks against the Republican censure of Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger.  The GOP is not pro-violence -- it's pro-Constitution, fairness, and the rule of law.  There's a big difference!

Which mega-corporations are most compromised by ties with, and sponsorship of, China's "genocide Olympics"?  Good question!  Find out here:

  1. Dr.Waddy from Jack: I rejoice in Chairwoman McDaniels' Rino free assertion of disdain for the leering doubt expressed by the MSM for the rejection by an increasingly Trump fortified RNC of the cringing apologists. Let this foster a marginalization of those who shrink from resistance to the totalitarian left in all its incipient presumptuousness!

  2. The media's attitude is really just a restatement of the premise of the January 6th committee itself: dissent=insurrection, and free speech=violence. I wish them luck selling that bill of goods to the American people!

  3. Dr.Waddy from Jack: Megaditto on that! The broadcast: you were so right to express caution about the bluffing that, at some level (but not Russia's resolution to keep Nato out of Ukraine, that is no bluff)can lead to tragic misunderstandings and consequences. Let us resolve to defuse this contretemps by giving Russia a diplomatically plausible assurance Nato will not embrace Ukraine! This is not right mountain for Nato to fight on but it IS that for Russia, should we unwisely push them to it. So find a way ,as diplomats do, to let each side fall back from this absurd confrontation! Russia's other demands? Nah, ain't happening and they do not dare force the issue! C'mon, let's both step back on Ukraine. Do we really want to make of Ukraine another, perhaps radioactive, Stalingrad? Hyperbolic? Maybe but be of much thought before you push a very proud and powerful nation up against what it regards as "the wall".

  4. Dr. Waddy from Jack: That is a fascinating view that Russia may be attempting incursion in Marxist ravaged Venezuela to counter our perceived interference in Ukraine. Reference to the Monroe Doctrine is germane; just imagine what mighthave transpired had we not originally asserted it! But unless Russia ventures to put nukes in that wasted land, their presence is but symbolic.

  5. Dr. Waddy from Jack: I learned very much more about the significance of the GOP Committee's scalding of Cheney and Kinzinger from your comments. It is, just as you say, "abundantly clear" that the Dems' hoped for tar brush will, based in casual and disingenuous misinterpretation of the 14th Amendent's very much qualified sanctions against closely defined (in the light of a very recent titanic insurrection 1861-1865)"insurrectionists",afford them victory in 2022 but especially 2024 when their dreaded bete noire, President Trump, looms!

  6. Dr. Waddy frm Jack: This effort has been the obvious motivation for the baldly partisan House Jan.6 Committee's frantic effort to make of this "insurrection" a reflexive synonym for anarchy. This effort has been endorsed by Cheney and Kinzinger in their forlorn ploy to define the man in whom the GOP has wisely invested its hopes for a restoration of real America's values in government, as an . . . gasp . . . "insurrectionist". They were rightfully shunned!

  7. Jack, I wonder whether even private assurances to Russia re: Ukraine and NATO might be enough to diffuse the present crisis? Possibly.

I agree: I don't lose any sleep over a Venezuelan/Russian invasion of the U.S. across our southern border. Maybe I should start calling it the "border", though, since it really is just an imaginary line these days and nothing more.

Jack, I wonder how widely Cheney and Kinzinger might be comfortable casting their "insurrectionist" net? Cruz and Hawley, perhaps? All House Republicans who voted not to certify Arizona's electoral votes? Giuliani, for good measure? Trump may be just the canary in the coal mine for anti-democratic machinations.

  8. Dr.Waddy from Jack: So some blue states are granting us gracefrom some Covid mandates. We all know that the left has delighted in the experience in authoritarian administration provided them by this pandemic. But it has also afforded us a very clear picture of how their dominant and general rule would be! I often note how essential I think presumptuousness is in the jaundiced leftist mind; consider this: two and a half years ago nobody knowed nuthin about this danged covid. But in JACK TIME the left presumed enough wisdom to feel free to arrogate to itself the gall to castigate, excoriate, demonize and disenfranchise any who doubted its perception of what to do. Why one might think
they deem themselves infallible, yes?!So what about this change? Oh Stalin and Mao bear them example; "say it and it is so and if you know what is good for you . . ." The left will of course also declare itself due full credit for any progress in fighting this scourge. Let us not ignore this lesson casually taught us by the American left, of its very self in power. That's how it would be in every setting and for everyone ( except their elite and cadre naturally).

  9. Dr. Waddy from Jack: So now we in Allegany Co, NY are "repellant" along withbeing deplorable! I know some people up there in Buffalo (God bless' em) think our county is part of neighboring Pennsyltucky and I wish we were!

  10. Dr. Waddy from Jack: What is a commie? The left has been blithe to accuse conservatives of being nazis so let us feel free to call them commies. Oh I do not doubt that perhaps most of today's far leftists and their tragically mislead lemmings would disagree with much of what Marx dreamed. So too have Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Ceaucescu, Castro, Mengistu Haile Merriam and AOC and her gangsters. But, after the pattern of leftists, let us generalize about "commies". A commie is one who believes history is scientically knowable and has been analysed by Marxists as an ongoing confrontation between the haves and have nots. The haves have due to their direction of cynical oppression to the have nots. Justice and prosperity will be accomplished when the have nots "fundamentally transform" humanity. Dissent from this certainty is evil deserving of summary punishment and relegation to outlaw status. That's a commie, including ingrate American commies.

  11. Well said, Jack: the presumptuousness of the Left in assuming its mask/vaccine fascism IS "science", and all dissent is "misinformation", is galling -- and utterly typical of the leftist mindset. That they assume themselves to be infallible is hardly news. What was different about the pandemic was that the public was momentarily terrified enough to defer to the "experts", who turned out to be creatures of the Left all along. I'd like to think that the public has learned its lesson. Maybe. We'll see. Certainly I think it's fair to say that the credibility/legitimacy of the expert class has never been lower...

You make a strong case that current leftists are temperamentally and intellectually of the commie ilk. I propose it may be as simple as: if, to you, humanity is but one big repository of victims and oppressors, well, you might just be a communist -- call yourself what you will.

  12. Dr. Waddy from Jack:Thanks and I'll "presume to add this". To a commie the catastrophic, sociopathic well recorded history(some of it seared into the memories of the living) of communism in power, is "irrelevant". Why? Because they say so! Enda "discussion!"
