America is Feeling the Bern, and For Many It's Heartburn

Friends, many of you are hyperventilating now that Bernie Sanders, an admitted socialist, is inching towards the Democratic nomination -- and many polls show him beating President Trump in a head-to-head match-up.  Well, I'm here to whisper some words of encouragement in your ears.  All is not lost!  Here's why.

First, Bernie is a long way from locking up the Democratic nomination.  In Nevada, where he will apparently scoop up two-thirds of the delegates, he got only one-third of the first round votes.  In national polls of Democrats, he's hovering around 30% support.  The betting markets now give him about a 55% likelihood of being the Dem nominee.  All that's impressive, but it doesn't seal the deal by any stretch of the imagination.  Just a few short months ago, Elizabeth Warren was in a similarly strong position...and now she's seen as less likely than Hillary Clinton to get the nomination!  Political realities can turn on a dime.  Yes, Bernie benefits from the divided field and the numerous candidates trying to claim the mantle of the "moderate alternative" to Bernie-style socialism, but he's got a long way to go, and the criticism that the Democratic establishment will unleash on him has only just begun.  Bernie has myriad skeletons in his closet -- he's got a very long record, after all -- but in the past no one ever bothered to rummage through his dirty laundry, because he wasn't seen as a credible candidate for President, but rather as a kindly old kook.  Well, things are about to "get real" for the Bernster, and no one can predict how that will turn out.  Consider, for instance, the fact that Mike Bloomberg is itching to spend his millions on anti-Bernie ads.  That could change the dynamics of this race in a hurry.

https://www.cnbc.com/2020/02/24/mike-bloomberg-prepares-media-blitz-against-bernie-sanders.html?

Consider also that, even if Bernie becomes the Democratic nominee, this is not the end of the world for America.  In fact, it could be the best news that Trump supporters have had in a long time.  That's because Bernie, as an unapologetic socialist/radical, ought to be a very weak general election candidate.  There's no question that he would be disowned by many down-ballot Democratic candidates and by establishment donors, organizers, and officeholders.  Bernie would almost certainly split the Democratic Party and cause diminished turnout among moderate Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents who would otherwise like to defeat Donald Trump in 2020.  He will forfeit a major portion of the Democrats' base, in other words, and this will almost certainly help Trump to win the election.  The Democrats' only hope, in fact, would be that a majority of voters hate Trump so much that they simply don't care who his opponent is.  That didn't work in 2016, and I don't expect it to work in 2020 either.

Lastly, I would point out that, even in the very worst case scenario, i.e. the scenario in which Bernie Sanders becomes the 46th President of the United States, the solidification of a Marxist tyranny, the redistribution of wealth, a government takeover of health care, etc. are by no means guaranteed.  In fact, even a President Sanders will be highly unlikely to accomplish and enact even as much as 10% of his radical agenda.  If one takes "Medicare for All" as an example, as Amy Klobuchar has pointed out, that idea doesn't even command the support of most Democratic Senators.  It commands the support of zero Republicans, so...simple math dictates that there is no chance whatsoever of Medicare for All being passed into law.  Other parts of Bernie's agenda would run into similar problems, so that, in my opinion, the main outcome of his presidency would likely be extreme frustration among his supporters, who would have expected a "revolution" and gotten next to nothing.  Meanwhile, an unpopular President Sanders would hand Republicans a golden opportunity to make a political comeback in 2022 and 2024.  And, in the wake of that comeuppance, my hope would be that "democratic socialism" would never be heard from again in America, although Marxism certainly won't evaporate altogether (it is, sad to say, a cancer that festers and grows unchecked in leftist brains).

So, to make a long story short, my fellow conservatives and patriots, the rise of Bernie Sanders DOES NOT portend the destruction of all we hold dear.  If we play our cards right, in fact, the fractures in the Democratic Party, and the escalating radicalism of that party, give us an excellent chance to win a solid victory in 2020 -- and thereafter to split the Democrats down the middle, such that they may never pose a threat to our republic and our way of life again.

I, therefore, am optimistic, and I invite you to take a deep breath and join me on the sunny side of life...

  1. Your article cheered me up a bit. However, the next few months until November 2020 are going to be real interesting. At least it won't be boring. I still have this sinking feeling that the "Democrats" will attempt to do something drastic to stop Trump from being reelected. I just do not trust them. They have been infiltrated by too many radical leftists, period.

  2. Anonynmous: Certainly I agree; the left would advance any tactic they think triumphant, sans any principled objection. This is an old story; we must be ready for their onslaught.

  3. So true: they will stop at nothing. Clearly they want to dust off the Trump-Russia circus act. More whistleblowers can't be ruled out. One has to wonder if they've shot their bolt, though. I personally believe they might have reached a point of diminishing returns with character assassination and manufactured scandals. Those tactics will get them 45+% of the vote, don't get me wrong...but they won't get over the finish line without a sound candidate of their own. And if they've got one of those stashed away, now would be the time to dust him off!

  4. Dr. Waddy and Anonymous: How very, very threatening the prospect of a Sanders Presidency is! It is appalling to think that a possibly decisive faction of our polity could empower him!

But as an adult in 1972 I remember how "possible" McGovern looked until the real America learned him. These Bernie fanatics are getting "high", as per their fashion, on his perceived possibilities. So many of them are the exalted "young". Well, their fevered efforts in '68 and '72 yielded ahhh, Nixon and uh, Nixon! I like Nixon but I know their type loathed him.Too bad!

  5. Quite right, Jack: Bernie appears to be the shortest and quickest road to four more years of Trump, so I say: Go, Bernie, go!

  6. I have no qualms that dems will "eat their own" (thanks for that thought, Dr. Waddy. Again, you must have an 'ear' on our wall).

Yes, indeed, I would say heartburn. I just can't simply wrap my head around Americans wanting socialism/communism. Quite frightening.

    1. If you asked Americans to define either Socialism/Communism, most would be unable to do it. If you asked most Americans who Karl Marx was, or who Lenin was, they would be unable to tell you. If you asked them when the Russian Revolution was, you would draw a blank. Ask them to tell you anything about The Cold War, and chances are you would get slim to zero information. Then ask them to tell you who Eugene V. Debs was, and you would get a bewildered look. You might get a response if you asked them anything about Stalin, but I doubt it.

  7. Dr. Waddy: Your well supported optimism is encouraging. But here are my concerns. First: SCOTUS; it really wouldn't take much to flip it. Pres. Sanders + one conservative departure could do it. Could a Republican Senate prevent him from esconsing another radical? It would have to survive two elections and would have to hold the fort for a perhaps unprecedented four years at least.Second, at his age, having devoted his life to his historically discredited creed, he will be very anxious to get radical mischief done. Third, he may be privy to our most critical secrets (I've always thought that the military may have withheld such info from Clinton and Obama). Fourth: he will bring legions of arrogant vindictive totalitarian leftists into unelected government positions.

I fully expect him to name a perceived moderate as his running mate. Tulsi perhaps? Romney would of course serve.

  8. Looking on the bright side, Bernie has a bad heart, so maybe he will drop dead on stage at one of the debates. Of course his personal health care plan seems to be keeping him alive, so we can't depend on that.

I guess I don't sound very charitable do I? That's because I am not, as far as these damn fools who are running for President on The "Democrat" ticket are concerned. I better quit watching the news, it is getting way too depressing.

Also, I still believe that the "Democrats" will attempt to do something drastic to prevent Trump from being reelected. I'm thinking of something like rigging the elections in some way. The radical left (and that is what the Dems are now) is capable of anything.

Sorry, but I am just not very optimistic about what's going to happen in the next few months. Hoping I am flat wrong about my predictions.

Everyone have a very nice day, except Bernie of course. Ha! Cheers!

  9. Too bad we can't get a Constitutional Amendment declaring the Democrats as a criminal organization. Ha! Guess that won't happen any time soon, will it? In reality, that is what they have become, and in my opinion they are enemies of The United States of America. Is that a harsh statement? Yes, but in reality it is true. So in the meantime, the American people have to endure their insults. In the end, who needs Russia, or China, or ISIS or any of the rest of them. We are our own worst enemies, aren't we. Pray to God that Trump wins this year, and keep praying that in 2024, The Republicans will find a way to stay in power. Other than that, hope that the Book of Revelation in the Bible, and that Armageddon and other events are coming soon. Okay, that's it for me. I'm out of here. Thanks for the opportunity to post on this blog, and best of luck to all of you.

  10. Anonymous: Charity in the face of those who are long since resolved to enslave you (as conservatives ARE now in N Y) is pusillanimous. Who would consent to such degradation had they the means to resist and now, the means to defeat it? NY may be lost but the real America is, most certainly NOT! The left has been blithe to level all manner of prosecution, character assassination and general excoriation to any who insolently deny its consummate virtue and justice. We must not be hesitant to play very, very hardball with them. They deserve it, it can marginalize them and we must resolve to use it to defeat their presumptuous and murderous attack on all we value and know to be positive, "Beat the buggers!" as George VI said to Churchill in the recent movie. In my prison staff career I was confronted by many who rely on intimidation, a favored tactic of the New Left (eg. political correctness and affirmative action). And the left was bade by Marx and Lenin to disdain all previously asserted standards for sympathy or empathy for a fundamentally corrupt world . They are WRONG and its simple; STAND UP TO THEM! The main battleground may well be right here in our country. The good 'ol Brits have set us an example in sending the left packing. We must do the same. They are only human after all, as are we.

    1. You are right, no pun intended. How about providing the left with something "uplifting" such as executing them by public hanging. Just joking of course. Ha! Of course there was a time in U.S. History when criminals were hung in public, after due process of course.

  11. Jack, I very much doubt that Bernie would choose a moderate as his running mate. That would be politically prudent, of course, but since when is prudence his style? I take him at his word when he says that a vast army of radicals is waiting to be mobilized, and will stream towards the polls if only the Marxist clarion call is sounded! Plus, he must realize that, due to his age, it's important that his successor be like-minded.

And you're right that President Sanders' most fearsome power would be his ability to appoint federal officials and judges. I firmly believe that the Senate would put obstacles in his path, and would nix the worst nominees, but you're correct that he could do considerable mischief in that regard -- but no more, arguably, than any other Democratic President, who would be choosing prospective judges from the same or similar lists.

Anonymous, so you watch the news -- as in, you watch cable news or one of the major networks? In that case, your consternation is understandable. The tv news is designed to scare, agitate, and polarize viewers. Frankly, your peace of mind probably would be enhanced by giving the news anchors a wide berth. I get my news online, and my outlook on life seems bright enough...

As for fixing the election, there are many shenanigans the Dems can pull, but outright electoral fraud is difficult to achieve on a useful scale, given that our elections are run at the local and state levels. We have Dem Governors in places like Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania that bear watching, nonetheless. I'd say the Left's domination of the media is much more threatening than their power over the election process, but that's just my perspective.

Could the Democratic Party become a banned criminal organization? Not easily, but if it were to foment revolution or even foster civil unrest there might be calls for its suppression. In my opinion, the American people will put up with a lot, but if the Dems begin to practice violence on a large scale, they will have worn out their welcome with most citizens. I'm a firm believer in the doctrine of "innocent until proven guilty" when it comes to any alleged criminal offense, but there are precedents in American history for the denial of certain rights, including the right to vote, based on one's affiliations with banned (or traitorous) organizations and movements. I don't believe President Trump has anything like this in mind, but if the plots against him cease to be quasi-lawful and degenerate into something more anarchic, he will have to do something.
