Friends, views certainly differ on the new security agreement that the U.S. has reached with Denmark and Greenland. Some say it will guarantee American hegemony permanently and at little cost to the USA. Others say that there was already plenty of security cooperation with the Danes and Greenlanders, and never much prospect of a Russian or Chinese conquest of Greenland. I'll let you decide for yourselves.

Greenland was one of several topics that DJT covered during his big speech at the UN today. He also threatened Iran with "annihilation", as per usual, but also expressed optimism that a deal will be struck, also as per usual. He's probably right, though, that the regime might come back to the table after the midterms, after which they (wrongly) assume that the Democrats will be in power and able to help them out. The Dems may well be in control of Congress, but Congress will have precious little ability to influence our conflict with Iran.

Being a true democracy, the US has a demonstrated history of doctrinal changes which lead to it rescinding its support for movements which have placed ALL their faith in us. A DSA America hating Congress would do its best to "assure"the Iranian neomedievalists that they may well still be able to continue their tyrannical rule and their fantastic dreams of terrorizing modern civilization.

His tract on the Jewish "question" embraced the libel of the Jew as fundamentally venal and therefore a pillar of the bourgeoisie. I wonder if his screed would have developed had he never lived? German 19th century thinking may have made it probable.
Dr. Waddy: Well, today PM Netanyahu courageously takes the podium in the very same "forum" disgraced by many who wish his very death and the utter physical destruction of Israel! Possibly many of them will pusillanimously "boycott" him as well as probably will the pipsqueak Marxist Jew hating "Dear Leader" of NYC, the home of myriad Jewish citizens in what was once a haven for them. The PM will, with head held high, hazard his entrance to a city degraded beyond measure by its empowerment of that incipient totalitarian and his opportunistic use of ICC dictum to "justify" calling for the PM's arrest.

I think Israel deserves some well considered and well intended constructive negative criticism. BUT! In no way does it deserve the terribly intense antipathy directed at it in a world full of injustices. I think that amounts to a continuation of the relentless abomination of "antisemitism" , which takes its place with the worst of the infamies, historically and some presently, forced on humans by other humans.

Some of them stayed, in sullen juvenile snit, to express their hostility with contemptuous silence at his every point. He noted their "moral cowardice" and proceeded with dignity and defiance to cast their displeasure back in their scowling visages.
His salient theme was that Israel cannot , will not, shrink from defending itself because it has no choice; the only alternative is the physical extermination of his nation. "The days when Jews were defenseless victims marched to slaughter are over!" "We stand against barbarians who threaten our commonly held civilization"
He termed demonstrators against Israel, some of them clearly antisemitic too, "phony human rights defenders" because of the restraint they show concerning Iranian oppression. In an objective and well balanced history of the Arab-Israeli conflict I read recently the author held that much of the unrelentingly vicious hatred directed at assertive Judaism is attributable to outrage exacerbated by resentment of Jewish uppityness (my term) "We in Israel do not wait for them to wake from their moral slumber." Dr. Waddy: PM Netanyahu proceeded to declare this "a war for truth" made even more challenging by modern social media. He accused oil rich Qatar of massive funding of anti Israel expression at American "universities" and noted that Turkey under Erdogan is fast becoming Israel's open enemy.
ReplyDeleteIn response to condemnation of Israel for "genocide" in Gaza he asked Israel's reflexive prosecutors: what genocidal regime gives vaccinations, food and much humanitarian aid to those innocents ravaged by Israel's unavoidable determination to root out detestable Hamas from their midst? A Fox commentator noted that an internationally recognized American expert on urban warfare has asserted that "Israel has done more to spare civilian casualties than any other country in history".
The Prime Minister dwelt on the grim truth that in response to Oct. 7 Israel has striven to prevent genocide , its own! He recalled the Six Day War , when Israel faced imminent invasion by several Arab powers convinced that they now had the means to eradicate Israel. (They were led by Egypt's Nasser , who had recently declared that with victory he would deport all foreign born Israeli Jews and that the native born would "cease to exist"). He noted the stark danger of extermination Israel faced in the Yom Kippur War in '73 ( in which he fought and when Israel prepared to use its valedictory "Samson" strategy with its nuclear arsenal, against all of Israel's tormentors). The PM mentioned , just by the by, that merely two of the thousands of missiles Iran has launched against Israel would level the "UN" complex in which they were seated.
I would ask of any who support the destruction of Israel: did monstrous Germany and Japan face actual complete
physical annihilation of their populations ?! Why then Israel?
BTW, I am not Jewish and I do hold that Israel must someday when it is not facing a new Holocaust do justice to those Palestinian Arabs who have been innocent victims of the foundation of Israel . So too should those nations which have cynically prevented assimilation of Palestinian Arabs into their countries and used them as pawns against Israel and much of the civilized world. I grew up in a neighborhood with a significant Jewish population and experienced much of Judaism's glorious and exemplary culture. The courageous perseverance of Judaism is of a direct kinship with the most trying resistances against unrelenting oppression historically displayed by many ethnic groups , nationalities and races.
PM Netanyahu presented a , yes, sublime example of "unconquerable constancy" (Churchill's words) and high civilization in his firm defiance of his low life detractors. He gave his insect , microbe critic Comrade Mamdani a right old hiding. Detached "American" critics like Comrades Mamdani , Piker and El Sayed frivolously pontificate on the tactics Israel was constrained to use in destroying a Hamas which had forcefully and cynically esconsed itself deep within the everyday settings of Gazan life. They employ the same "reasoning" in denouncing American opposition to Islamist aggression. In consideration of the many closed minds to which he was speaking in that hall the PM took the trouble to point out the obvious conclusion on the part of unrelentingly existentially threatened Israel , of the grim necessity always in Israeli minds , that they fully expect such brain dead ruthlessness from those powers which besiege them. Its an ever present , ubiquitous reality for Israel and the PM described it faithfully. Daily reminders of the ancient abomination of vicious disdain for Jews , reaffirmed in technologically, doctrinally intensified and astonishing horror in the 20th century, is , I think, the theme of Israeli life and is maybe unprecedented and unequaled in this yet pitiless world.

Now I'm sure , Comrade Mayor, that despite being a rather obvious Marxist you would never advance a generalized disdain for Jews , oh no, even though antisemitism as we know the term is a staple of Marxism. But gee, people of far less intellectually gifted perception do think: '"If the Mayor doesn't like them , then he won't mind us hassling them".
Of course those who teach and those who finance the blatant Jew hatred manifested in NYC area "university " havens add to the problem, now don't they. They delight in making all Jews with whom they have contact feel unwelcome indeed and to understandably perceive present physical danger. Surely those of the modern touchy feely type who infest the American academy are particularly sensitive to (gasp) offense, at least when they see it directed at them. But when it comes to chastisement of heretics, well, "de comburendo heretico" of old is their unapologetic battle cry. Oh, I'm sure the Iranian regime would take great comfort in a Democratic victory in the midterms...but I question how long their elation would last. Hitler was giddy when FDR died because he thought it would change the trajectory of the war. Hitler was delusional, and so are the mullahs.
ReplyDeleteIt's a very interesting question what Marx would have made of the movement he inspired or of, say, the USSR. He might have been disgusted by it, or he might have regarded it as crude but essentially on the right track. I'm certainly not knowledgeable enough about Marx to say. At the end of the day, though, who cares what some eccentric German intellectual thought about anything? It's what the politicians MAKE of Marxism that counts.
I didn't see Netanyahu's speech, but I'm sure he proved an able defender of Israel's right to exist and its right to defend itself. Are there those who would obliterate Israel and kill all Jews? You bet. Probably billions of them nowadays, and rising. Is there any nation or organization out there that COULD eliminate Israel or its people? No, there isn't, so I think the Israelis and their defenders can breathe a sigh of relief on that score. The fact is that Israel's continued overlordship of the West Bank and Gaza, and its custodianship of the Arabs who live there, put it in a lose-lose situation, in terms of global public opinion. Israel will always be despised internationally as long as it remains in an essentially colonial position vis-a-vis millions of Arabs. Solutions are not easy to come by, but I hope someone will come by them, and soon.

DeleteI don't think the Arabs and The Israelis will ever get along. As soon as Israel became a sovereign nation in 1948, various Arab countries attacked it immediately, Egypt being prominent for decades.
October 7 was "the straw" that broke the camel's back" so to speak. Key in this situation/contest is Jerusalem, where the Israelis (at least the religious one) want to rebuild The Temple on the same site as The Muslim venerated Dome of the Rock. Sorry, but there is no man-made solution to this. This conflict will go on until the end of time, and then God will decide everything.
Dr. Waddy: I agree, there is no entity which could destroy Israel . Israelis have a motivation probably unexperienced by any modern country today. They KNOW and if some had forgotten , Oct.7 reaffirmed: if they were to be conquered and occupied by their obvious foes they would be physically driven into the sea or Holocausted again, to the very last person. They have for the last 80 years finally settled their minds on this demonstrated truth:: the world is no friend to Jews and never has been. They have no place else to go where they would not be guaranteed ,at the least ,degrading disdain and often murderous antipathy. Even the accomodating US held them undesirable in many settings until it became unfashionable to do so. But now America itself is domestically assaulted by a Marxist Jew hating movement to which it has already surrendered its largest city and that city's myriad Jewish citizens and recklessly bids even to cede control of its Congress by next year! And it has national elections every two years, in which those who deny the justice of Israel's existence could at any time prevail. Who could Israel absolutely depend upon in extremis? Maybe, despite our Israeli recognized generous support up until now, NOBODY! But Israelis have long since resigned themselves to this stark reality and realistically and necessarily look upon any plainly purposed military threat, regular or irregular, as possibly mortal to them.
ReplyDeleteI do not think they would ever give up the West Bank , which they took while also defeating Islamic Jordan's vicious refusal to allow them access to Holy sites. The West Bank includes the ancient lands of Judea and Samaria, which are very dear to them.
I once read a plausibly worded expression of an opinion that the world is now reaping the whirlwind of its historic refusal to treat Jews fairly and that Israeli's need have no moral concern about its unfavorable effect on the ruthless world. For what its worth I do not fully agree with Israelis if that is their conviction BUT: if in response to the terrible injustices and trials of its 2000 year diaspora Israeli Jews say: "for 1900 years we tried to be productive citizens in our host countries ; we were never welcome and seldom more than uneasily tolerated. And then, the 20th Century. . . . ! We have had it! We finally have our own country now and we are going to keep it !" : if they maintain this, they do have compelling reason.
Israel has proven it has the resolve and the grit to back that up and its a reality that a hostile world (as exemplified in the "UN" last week ) will just have to live with. Perhaps if the anti Israel world would choose to accept the permanent reality of the Jewish state, Israel would be free to direct part of its formidable energy and its high culture to addressing the necessity of doing justice for those innocents who were wronged by the tactics Israel has had to use to defend itself. I'm confident that an Israeli high civilization would then, like that of the US , resolve to do what recompense it can. Perhaps Israel's implacable enemies would find that cooperation with Israel's high civilization might bring the Middle East unprecedented material well being and its myriad advantages and rewards.
But the immediate solution is to fulfill the purpose which drove us to war with Iran, the engine of murderous reaction in the Middle East. We must permanently disempower them to work their atavistic terror on the Middle East and by extension, us. We must use our military power to destroy their internationally coercive capabilities and convince them that we will be conducting unrelenting surveillance to prevent any revival of those capabilities . Sure, maybe lets make a "deal"but let it be premised by assurance to them of our absolute distrust of them and our unwavering resolve to work immediate destruction on any attempt of theirs to rebuild any offensive force. President Reagan once advised :trust but verify"; our watchword, plainly expressed to Iran , must be "distrust and consistently verify!"
Dr. Waddy: I should have said above "absolute distrust of their present regime or anything like it." Just asJapan and Germany rejoined the civilized world , Iran might be able to do so.
ReplyDeleteRay: My understanding is Israel does not prevent Muslims from ascending the Temple mount unless of course they present an obvious threat. That's better than how Jews wanting to go to the Wailing Wall were denied access to it until they took control of it in the Six Day War. My guess only is that Israel would not rebuild the Temple on the site of the Dome of the Rock. Israel is, I think, of too high a civilization to do such an outrage.
ReplyDeleteRay, I tend to agree that amity between Israel and the Arab world is a pipe dream, BUT a diminution of tensions and hostility is achievable, and was achieved prior to October 7th. Sabotaging that detente was (I assume) the main purpose of the attacks that day, and boy did that plan work!!! Anyway, I maintain that, if Israel were to somehow find a way to unburden itself of its supervisory role vis-a-vis the West Bank and Gaza Arabs, it would attract a lot less ire, in the Middle East and, even more so, in the West. But, Jack, I agree with you that Israel will never relinquish control of the entire West Bank. The best the Palestinian Arabs could ever hope for is some kind of partition, which they have now, but with continued Israeli oversight, and it's that daily, intimate, in-your-face Arab-Israeli toxic relationship that wears so much on Arab and world opinion.

" described how the world dominated by Islam fell behind that of the West.In doing so he of course has attracted the reflexive hostility of those who use "cultural relativism" as a cudgel against anyone who dares to recognize that some civilizations work better than others. Western civilization is conveniently denied this protection by those of such antiintellectual mien.
Oh, I think the Arab (and Persian) world is well aware that Israel and the West are much richer than they are. From this, I suspect, they conclude little except that we are greedy, heartless, heathen bastards.
