Winter is Here!

Friends, although lefties and elitist insiders assume that everything Trump does is motivated by greed, arrogance, or stupidity, I take the President at his word that the purpose of our strikes against Iran is to allow the Persian people to rise up and reclaim their freedom and their sovereignty from fundamentalist tyrants.  Will it work?  That's hard to say, but it's one of the main topics on this week's Newsmakers show.  Don't miss out!  Brian and I also discuss relations with Venezuela, tariff refunds, the vacuity of leftist claims that we live in a "dictatorship", the harm that illegal immigration does throughout the Americas, the upcoming Paramount acquisition of Warner Bros., and more!

ICE Barbie Goes Back in Her Box

Friends, today we got the disappointing news that President Trump has decided to fire Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.  I figured it was a bad sign when Trump failed to single out Noem for praise at the State of the Union.  Sometimes I hate being right all the time...  Well, why am I disappointed?  Because every retreat that Trump makes confirms in the minds of Democrats and lefties that they are winning.  Because Trump is naive if he thinks that changing personnel will mitigate the media's and the Left's utter disdain for his immigration policies.  Because Kristi Noem, although she isn't perfect, is basically a victim of her own success.  Crime has plummeted.  The border is secure.  We've deported and otherwise rid ourselves of three million illegal immigrants in one year.  By any objective measure, that's a pretty strong record for Donald Trump's DHS commandant.  But Noem's success made her a favorite target of lefties, and the fact that she's a physically attractive woman to boot -- well, that made her Public Enemy No. 1.  Okay, No. 2.  Anyway, does her firing signal a retreat from Trump's deportation strategy?  Let's hope not, because that really would be a crying shame.

You Can't Please Everyone

Friends, good news: the U.S. Senate has declined to place limits on the authority of President Trump to use force against Iran.  Only one Republican -- Rand Paul -- voted to handcuff DJT, while only one Democrat -- John Fetterman -- voted to maintain the President's freedom of action.  Of course, none of these votes matter in practice, because any resolution requiring the President to disengage from hostilities would, we assume, be vetoed by that same president.  Still, it's significant that the Senate is willing to give Trump the benefit of the doubt, for now, since, according to polls, most Americans are not.  I personally take Trump at his word that there will be no extended "war" with Iran, and no U.S. occupation of Iran.  Instead, we are doing our best to facilitate a takeover of the country by secular, moderate elements, although whether such elements will emerge remains to be seen.

https://www.ms.now/news/trump-iran-war-powers-senate

President Trump is greatly irritated by Spain's refusal to allow U.S. military forces based in that country to join in hostilities against Iran.  He has threatened, in fact, to place an embargo against all U.S. trade with Spain.  The Europeans naturally regard any such suggestion with horror, and they say that our trade deal with the EU precludes any such action.  Does it?  I dunno, but sooner or later I would advise President Trump to use his power to embargo other countries, because it would be a felicitous demonstration of his executive authority, especially in light of the Supreme Court's decision to impose burdensome restrictions on his ability to use tariffs.  An embargo, needless to say, is a heck of a lot more serious than a mere tariff, and, as long as President Trump retains the ability to embargo our adversaries, he will enjoy enormous leverage in our trade negotations with friend and foe alike.  If all he does is posture and vent, on the other hand, embargoes, or potential embargoes, will frighten no one.

Guns A-Blazin'!

Friends, U.S. and Israeli military power is making short work of the mighty Iranian Navy, pictured above back when it was afloat.  Indeed, our military operations are proving extremely successful, but it's the political piece of the puzzle that counts: the formation of an organized, viable opposition movement that can take control of the country and install a new government.  Of course, Rome wasn't built in a day...  Neither was Persepolis.

https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2026/03/02/centcom-tehrans-gulf-of-oman-fleet-wiped-out-zero-ships-remain-as-u-s-hits-1250-targets/

In other news, France is extending its nuclear umbrella, ambiguously but adamantly, over several of its European allies, in a gesture that underlines, as per usual, its pusillanimity.  It's unclear what France is promising to do, or if indeed it would even have the gumption to use nukes to defend itself, and it's extra unclear why this declaration matters when ALL the relevant countries are in NATO, and thus already enjoy a total security guarantee from every NATO member state, including the United States (and France).  Of course, to be fair to the French, NATO's strength and integrity, over the years, has been buttressed by the fact that no one has ever dared challenge it.  The same could be said for France's nuclear deterrent as well.  What we know for sure is that France, and every European country, refuses to deploy even conventional military forces, in miniscule amounts, to defend the people of Ukraine, who they regard as part and parcel of "the West", even if they lack membership in the EU or NATO.  Bottom line: the Europeans' record of fighting (and dying) for their sovereignty and their freedom, at least since 1945, doesn't bear much scrutiny.

Finally, almost every poll, except this one, agrees that the dastardly Dems have the edge going into the midterms.  The margins matter a great deal, however.  If the Dems squeak by with a slim popular vote majority in the House, they might fail to capture the majority of seats.  If they win by 5 points or more, then even the Republican Senate could be in jeopardy.  Will Iran play a role in determining the outcome?  It's way too early to tell.

Back to the Future?

Friends, it appears that President Trump has decided to role the dice!  He's authorized massive, sustained strikes on Iran, with the explicit goal of overthrowing the theocratic regime there.  Will it work?  Your guess is as good as mine.  It's now up the people of Iran to step up to the plate.  I hope they will, and I hope some of their patriotic police and military leaders will help them do it.  The best case scenario might be a caretaker government led by the son of the former Shah, but honestly almost any new faces in the Iranian government are bound to be an improvement on what we've got.  Of course, that's what a lot of Iranians said back in '79 too, and look how that turned out!  There's no question that we're taking a huge risk here, but the potential upside is vast, so I'm glad Trump pulled the trigger.  You can't promise help and then offer none...

Of Paramount Importance

Friends, if there's one thing that could move the dial in America's culture wars, and its partisan struggles, it's the balance of power in the media and on social media.  If some of the big arbiters of our national conversation were to change hands -- like, say, the major TV networks, or the Hollywood studios, or Google, or Apple, or Meta -- then the nature of our culture and our politics might meaningfully shift.  A single election victory, by contrast, shifts nothing, fundamentally.  That's why Netflix's retreat from its purchase of Warner Bros. is so significant, and Paramount's victory is so portentous.  This means that the Trump-friendly Ellisons will have a seat at the table in Hollywood, and therefore in our popular culture, AND they will now be in control of CNN, which, although its viewership is small, still exercises an important influence over the news and those who consume it vocariously as well as sporadically.  I have high hopes that the Ellisons will use their newfound power to make America, well, greater than it's been, if not necessarily as great as Trump and Trump supporters had in mind.  We shouldn't get carried away about what this all means, because so far CBS, which is already part of Paramount, hasn't exactly prostrated itself before the MAGA movement.  Progress might be slow, therefore, but every little bit helps!

In other news, Bill Clinton testified before a House panel today about his ties to Jeffrey Epstein.  According to him, he did nothing wrong, and he saw nothing scandalous or illegal either.  Well, that was predictable!   Is Slick Willy a credible witness?  You can decide that for yourself, but the truth is that there has never been proof that any prominent American politician went on a pedophilic spree on Epstein island, and, if the evidence hasn't materialized by now, it probably never will.  But hey, by all means, let's fixate on Epstein for another few years...  It's not like the Democrats will let us forget about it, even if we might want to.

First Duty

Friends, tonight President Trump gave the longest State of the Union address in history, and, I must say, I was amused!  He touted his administration's accomplishments, of which there are many, and challenged the Democrats, in a highly memorable fashion, to admit that the "first duty" of the U.S. government is to "protect American citizens, not illegal aliens".  They sat on their hands, needless to say.  They did a lot of that tonight, and in fact dozens of them boycotted the speech altogether.  No matter!  A lot of independents and swing voters were watching, and they saw a man who is unapologetic, energetic, and downright exultant at the progress that he and America are making.  Will it work in November?  It may not, given that Trump's enemies in the media control the narrative most of the time, but tonight he was, well, vintage Trump, and he put some spring in the step of everyone who proudly supported him in the last election.  Kudos, Mr. President, and I know I speak for many when I say: we're not tired of winning in the least!  We'll take three more years of it, please, at a minimum!

The System Works!

Friends, hearty congrats to Dear Leader Kim Jong Un, who today was reelected as the head of North Korea's Workers' Party!  Many analysts were on tenterhooks in the lead-up to this highly competitive contest, so it's a relief to see the DPRK (re)embrace time-tested leadership.  No doubt Kim's chosen successor, his 13 year old daughter, will prove even more statesmanlike...  If only we had visionary rulers of equally high quality here in the USA!

In much less important news, the U.S. men's ice hockey team today won the gold medal over bitter rival Canada.  This is the first gold medal for the U.S. in hockey since 1980, and that was a humdinger of a contest, as we all know.  Will Canada finally show us a little respect???  Don't count on it.  Those Canucks are incorrigible.

The Trump Machine

Friends, at long last, I've written another article!  It was a long time in coming.  This one is about the remarkable, and very favorable, contrast between the first Trump Administration and the second.  This time around, Trump means business, and he and his team are executing their strategy with robotic  efficiency and precision.  Oh, sure, mistakes have been made, but infinitely fewer than before, and that gives me cause for celebration!

President Trump is Running a Tight Ship and Giving the Deep State a Run For Its Money

Memories tend to be short in American politics, but it was not so long ago that Donald Trump was a first term president and, if we're to be honest, a flailing one at that. Trump's presidency began with the hiring and firing of National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, which sent the signal early on that Trump was 1) highly responsive to media criticism, and 2) more than willing to jettison anyone in his circle who he viewed as a polling liability. The result was massive turnover throughout the four years of Trump's first term, a constant barrage of media attacks, and a steady drumbeat of policy reversals, as Trump struggled to find a tone and a direction that resonated with both the public and the D.C. in-crowd. Trump was also repeatedly hamstrung by the seditious behavior of his own appointees, who frequently leaked information to the press, and often ended up on the outside looking in, joining the ranks of Trump's bitterest critics and most formidable enemies. It was not, in short, an administration characterized by loyalty, efficiency, or consistency, to say the least.

That's why the smooth functioning of Trump's second term administration comes as such a pleasant surprise to his supporters. Trump's Chief of Staff this time around is Susan Wiles, who effectively ran his 2024 presidential campaign. Wiles has kept Trump focused and dissuaded him from posting rash or self-destructive comments on social media. She has also helped Trump to assemble a team, centered on his cabinet, that is competent, deferential, and ideologically in sync with Trump and the MAGA movement.

Compared to Trump's first term, his second has featured remarkably few personnel changes. We saw one notable exception recently, with the ouster of Assistant Attorney General Gail Slater, who was in charge of the DOJ's all-important antitrust division. Slater appears to have been encouraged to resign because of persistent conflicts with her boss, Attorney General Pam Bondi, potentially verging into insubordination and mendacity, not to mention selective leaking. She allegedly lied to Bondi about checking with intelligence officials before maneuvering to block a national security-related merger, which some intel experts said helped China at our expense.

Rather than let Slater hang around and become a cancer on his administration, though, Trump – or rather Bondi – engineered her quiet departure, without undue notice from the press or significant damage to Trump or the MAGA movement. Meanwhile, Bondi, despite a drumbeat of criticism from the media and Democrats, retains Trump's confidence and continues her efforts to bring justice to Deep State darlings like Adam Schiff, James Comey, et al. All this shows an administration capable of a deftness and a poise quite unlike the manic chaos that characterized its first iteration in 2017-2021.

None of this is to deny that the Democrats and the Deep State retain powerful assets in their relentless and ruthless drive to obstruct Trump and MAGA. The mainstream media remains as implacably hostile as ever, and it has succeeded in vilifying ICE, the Border Patrol, and Trump himself as far as half the country is concerned. Meanwhile, liberal judges, although they have not had the same success in sabotaging executive power as they did in Trump's first term, have nonetheless proved a significant obstacle. D.C. juries and grand juries, infected with TDS, have also made it nearly impossible to hold any prominent Democrat or leftist accountable for crimes he or she may have committed.

The fact remains that Trump haters seldom are in a position, in his second term, to dismiss the President as a bumbler or a buffoon. Quite the contrary, they hate Trump now more than ever, but because of his policy successes rather than his failures. They know that Trump now has a smart, articulate, and loyal team surrounding him, and that he is painstakingly executing a well-considered set of policies that is rolling back wokeism and bureaucratic overreach, while it reaffirms our constitutional liberties, our national sovereignty, our common civilization, and our capitalist and competitive values.

This time, leftists are not aghast at Donald Trump and his presidency because they are train wrecks, but because they are sleek, modern, and powerful engines of change that threaten to obliterate everything in their path – the Deep State, most of all.

Whale or Minnow?

Friends, today's Supreme Court ruling against most of President Trump's tariffs could end up being a very big deal...or it could end up being a great big ZERO.  That's because the President -- any president -- has numerous arrows in his quiver if he wants to impose tariffs and/or restrict foreign access to U.S. markets.  Trump has castigated SCOTUS for its cowardice and disloyalty, but he seems confident that his tariff regime will survive in a new guise.  I hope so, because the problems that tariffs aim to fix, mainly the giant U.S. trade deficit, are serious, and it's about time that someone in charge took them seriously, therefore!  Moreover, Trump's tariffs to date have had a pretty negligible effect on overall U.S. trade.  One thing is for sure: we haven't heard the last from DJT on this subject, or any subject!!!

https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2026/02/20/trump-imposes-10-percent-global-tariff-after-supreme-court-struck-down-emergency-powers-tariffs/

In other news, economic growth in the fourth quarter was way down to just 1.4%, and the government shutdown was a big reason why.  The Dems will be happy about that, and I fear it could tempt them to make more maximalist demands budget-wise in future, with more shutdowns in their back pocket in case Trump fails to acquiesce.  The economy right now is sound, and Republicans are still at a disadvantage going into the midterms.  Imagine what the polls would look like if a recession took hold!  You better bet the Dems are licking their chops...

Beating a Dead Horse

Friends, today, (former) Prince Andrew was arrested, basically for allegedly sharing confidential government files with Jeffrey Epstein.  Well, I for one am quite tired of the Epstein pile-on, particularly as it affects, uhh, Mr. Windsor.  The man has been quite comprehensively ruined already.  It is more than a little ironic that the chief victim of the mass release of the "Epstein Files", demanded by Democrats, wasn't Donald Trump, as intended, but a member of the royal family.  And how many leading politicians, in Britain and the U.S., would be guilty of the same offense, I wonder: sharing privileged information with cronies?  I shudder to think!  Andrew is a fall guy extraordinaire, if you ask me, and it ill becomes the political elite to revel in his humiliation.

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cx28yel4811o

In other news, a vast collection of U.S. military assets, including two aircraft carriers, is now present in or near the Persian Gulf, or soon will be.  Iran is the obvious target, but the purpose of any potential strikes is unclear.  Are we trying to force Iran to abandon its nuclear program, or are we trying to force the Iranian leadership to abandon the country and concede power to the people?  Those are two very different objectives, and if we're not very careful we may fall short in both respects.

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c1d64p3q2d0o

Finally, we got word today that the total U.S. trade deficit for 2025 was down on 2024, but by a miniscule amount.  That seems surprising, given that we were told that Trump's tariffs would devastate our trading relationships, and no one would want to do business with us.  So much for that prediction!  On the other hand, you could say that tariffs have been a bit of a disappointment, because we were hoping to radically restructure our trading relationships and reduce our dependence on imports, but by and large that hasn't happened.  My conclusion is that tariffs are working, but not enough.  Maybe we need to increase them?

Wait, Now Masks Are Bad???

Friends, the Left is very clear on a couple things: ICE=Nazis, and those Nazis should obligingly ditch their masks so that noble Antifa types can track them down and mete out some frontier justice to them.  What a great plan!  Well, Tom Homan lays out exactly why those masks are necessary.  It's the Dems/lefties themselves who have made it so!!!  The fact that, just a few years ago, these nutjobs were demanding that we all be masked makes this situation extra ludicrous, needless to say.

Happy Presidents' Day!

Friends, Happy Presidents' Day!  We've had some doozies, all right...  How fortunate that we currently have a president whose statesmanship, wisdom, and integrity are beyond question.  (Ha!)  All kidding aside, presidents are great, but we may fixate on them a tad too much in America today.  Believe it or not, a president, even with the best of intentions, can only do so much...  They can do more, of course, when they have the American people on their side.

Speaking of the presidency, could the Dems be dense enough to renominate...Kamala Harris in 2028???  They could be!  My, what a gift that would be...

Meanwhile, the Europeans are wringing their hands, as per usual, over the state of the transatlantic alliance.  They feel like they can no longer count on the U.S. to lead the charge against their favorite boogeyman: Russia.  Well, that's true, but on the other hand we still have tens of thousands of troops in Europe, we're still sending oodles of weapons to Ukraine (paid for by Europe, thankfully), and Europe is still sheltering under our nuclear umbrella.  Ergo, we still bear many of the costs of our "partnership" with Europe (and Canada), but we get more abuse than ever and could just as easily be sucked into another world war on their behalf.  I say: cut the cord!  End U.S. membership in NATO.  Give those Euro-weenies some tough love, at long last...

Whither ICE?

Friends, our immigration enforcement apparatus, including ICE and Border Patrol, is at a crossroads.  On one hand, we have a president who is now willing and apparently eager to enforce our immigration laws, and who has already removed 2+ million illegal immigrants from the country.  We also threw tens of billions of dollars at the mission of deporting illegals, courtesy of the "Big, Beautiful Bill", and that new infrastructure is just about to come online, as you'll read below.  On the other hand, the Dems and their media allies have made the demonization of ICE a top priority, and the retreat of DHS from Minneapolis suggests that the Trump Administration may be getting cold feet about aggressively enforcing immigration laws in blue cities and states, especially in an election year.  What's more, there are finite numbers of hardened felons to deport.  Once we're down to undocumented grandmas and fruit pickers, we have to wonder whether the Trump Administration will have the same zeal to deport, deport, deport...  The question is, therefore: are enforcement efforts about to ramp up, or are they about to cool down?  In essence, the answer to the question is 100% political.  It depends on the priorities and intestinal fortitude of Donald Trump himself.

My Love Letter to America

Friends, it's Valentine's Day, and that means that naturally I got you something special!!!  No, it's not flowers or a box of chocolates.  It's winter, so all the flowers are dead, and I can assure you that I ate all the chocolates.  Instead, this V-Day you're getting...my latest Newsmakers interview!  Oh boy!  What a treat.  Brian and I discuss who the protesters are in places like Minneapolis and what motivates them, the reticence of the younger generation on political controversies, the mass firing of Washington Post reporters, the unique poisiton of Rand Paul in the U.S. Senate, the propriety of the Department of War's campaign against drug boats coming to America, the prospects for the SAVE Act, the benefits (and costs) of cracking down on illegal immigration, the pros and cons of tariffs against Canada, the ongoing strength of the U.S. economy, and the relevance of the mainstream and alternative media to public opinion.  Sounds like the sort of lineup that ought to make you swoon!  You're welcome, and I hope that you and your special someone enjoy listening...

A Legacy of Failure

Friends, everyone knows that there's still such a thing as the "mainstream media", a.k.a. the "legacy media", and it leans left (to put it mildly), but what is the alternative media, or the "new media", and who has the edge there?  This is not my area of expertise, but I'm sure the alternative media could be divided into many sub-categories.  One in which right-wingers appear to have an advantage is with social media "influencers".  Presumably, this means podcasters and bloggers and people who make short videos for YouTube, TikTok, and the like.  The Dems invested a lot of money in dominating this space in '24, and clearly they fell flat on their faces.  We can't count on them staying at a disadvantage forever, however.  As we speak, they're blanketing the internet with smears against ICE and edited videos of encounters with federal law enforcement that make, or try to make, Trump and Co. look worse than Pol Pot.  Expect this war for the "hearts and minds" of social media users to intensify in the months and years ahead, and special thanks to Elon Musk, whose purchase of X kept conservatives competitive in social media at a moment when it looked like we might be frozen out altogether...

Bull Market

Friends, the Dems and the media talking heads -- those irrepressible gloomy Guses -- have been trying to convince Americans ever since, oh, January 20th, 2025, that the economy BLOWS!!!  Well, news flash: it doesn't!  Today job growth beat estimates, the unemployment rate fell, wage gains remained robust, and, as per Peter Navarro, the early signs of a manufacturing renaissance are upon us.  This is all very good news, needless to say.  The bad news, however, is that the politics of the U.S. economy are largely about perception, not reality, and perceptions are still pessimistic, to say the least.  Be that as it may, if we really were in a recession, Republicans' goose would be cooked in November.  As it is, we at least have a fighting chance.

https://www.cnbc.com/2026/02/11/jobs-report-january-2026-.html

https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2026/feb/10/trump-reversed-biden-made-manufacturing-decline/

In other news, the U.S. House, including six Republicans, have taken issue with President Trump's tariff policies towards Canada.  I hate to see Trump rebuked by Congress, but on the other hand I happen to agree with those six Republicans that DJT's decision to pick a fight with Canada (over fentanyl???) made very little sense.  And are they the 51st state yet?  No?  Guess that gambit backfired...

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/clyz2142e77o

So, yes, Trump does make the occasional mistake.  On the other hand, the Democrats seem determined to wreck the economy on purpose.  Witness California leftists' campaign to impose a crushing wealth tax on billionaires.  Not surprisingly, those billionaires are heading for the hills -- or, more accurately, for the warm waters of Biscayne Bay.  Can't say I blame 'em.

SAVE Democracy Before It's Too Late?

Friends, DJT is encouraging Congressional Republicans to pass the SAVE Act, which in essence would require voter ID in federal elections.  This is a broadly popular notion, but Democrats are bitterly opposed to it (I wonder why?), so it's very, very unlikely to pass unless the Senate scraps the filibuster, and the chances of that seem slim to none.  Ergo, you can expect future elections to look a lot like past elections: messy and contested.  On the other hand, there's real hope that the Supreme Court might unilaterally alter the political/electoral landscape in ways that would be profoundly helpful to Republicans.  We've talked about some of those ways before, but here's another: it could eliminate illegal aliens from the count that determines Congressional apportionment.  If that happened, or if President Trump succeeded in evicting all 15+ million illegals from the country, the Dems would lose potentially dozens of House seats.  I like the sound of that!

Meanwhile, the murder rate is plummeting, in case you haven't heard.  Liberals are puzzled, since isn't EVERYTHING getting worse in Trump's America?  As this article makes plain, the concept that credit might be owed to Trump, or that the deportation of hundreds of thousands of criminals might explain some of the decline in murders, simply doesn't occur to Trump haters.  Surprise, surprise!  The big takeaway, though, is that, despite what the media might claim, EVERYONE in America is SAFER since Donald Trump took office.

Friends, it ain't easy being a limousine liberal.  I mean, once in a while, you might have to put gas in your limousine, and there's a small possibility that your gold card will be declined...  Speaking of which, the Fourth Estate is INCENSED because some elite journalists at the Washington Post just got pink slips.  I mean, imagine the temerity: Jeff Bezos thinks he can FIRE the stuffed shirts who make it their business to lead the "resistance" to Orange-Man-Bad day in and day out???  Outrageous!  Like Stephen Colbert, these so-called reporters believe that their jobs are sacrosanct, because any refusal to employ them would be "censorship".  They have, in other words, a God-given right (or it is goddess-given?) to fulminate at Trump, MAGA, "white supremacists", ICE, capitalism, etc etc.  Well, I've got news for them: Jeff Bezos has every right to demand that his newspaper be a going concern, and he has every right to fire journalists who don't produce anything other than erudite propaganda.  Having said all that, I'm sure most of these effete Trump haters will land on their feet, because the TDS machine tends to take care of its own.  Pity, because I'd love to have seen some of these WaPo professional agitators working the checkout line at the Piggly Wiggly.  A man can dream!

Nothing to Hide

Friends, kudos to DHS, which has decided to require all ICE and Border Patrol agents in Minneapolis to wear body cams.  This will make it far easier to catch street thugs red-handed!

And kudos to President Trump as well, for playing nice with Colombia's President Gustavo Petro.  I mean, let's topple one leftist dictator at a time...  We've still got work to do in Venezuela, clearly!

Fed Led by Kev?

Friends, DJT has made a big decision: he has nominated Kevin Warsh as the next Chairman of the Federal Reserve.  Opinions differ about whether Warsh would deliver the kind of changes at the Fed that Trump has been pushing for, such as more accountability and lower interest rates.  Time will tell.  All I know is that Warsh played tennis in high school, which shows promise, in my book!

In other news, a "massive armada" of U.S. warships is steaming towards the Persian Gulf, but to what purpose?  Trump is hinting that strikes against the mullahs may be in the offing, but a lot of key players in the region are advising caution.  I say: MAN UP!!!  This is the best opportunity to topple the regime in decades, and it would be unforgivable to let it pass.  Frankly, it may already have passed, and that is most unfortunate.

Lastly, don't miss this week's Newsmakers show, featuring moi!  Brian and I discuss a number of intriguing historical topics, as well as Trump's war of words against the Fed, the incredible shrinking Conservative Party in the U.K., the prospects for a shutdown in D.C., and more!

Climbdown?

Greetings from sunny Florida, friends!  Looks like I picked the ideal time to flee from Western New York, because many of you are presently digging yourselves out from the mother of all winter storms...  My heart goes out to you!

There are signs tonight that DJT is looking for an off-ramp from the escalating tensions in the state of Minnesota.  I'm in no position to judge the propriety of each and every enforcement action that ICE undertakes, but I do know one thing for sure: any sign of retreat on the part of the Trump Administration will embolden Democrats, radicals, and street thugs alike.  That doesn't mean that the occasional tactical retreat isn't called for, but I would hate to see any loss of momentum for our campaign to deport illegal immigrants, because it's going to take great focus and determination to pull it off.  We'll see how it goes.

In other news, another prominent Conservative M.P. has defected to the Reform Party, signaling major headaches for the Tories.  This particular lady is a former Attorney General and Home Secretary, no less!  Reform seems to be on course to become either the U.K.'s new official opposition, or the government itself, although neither will happen overnight.

Era of Not-So-Bad Feelings?

Friends, things were looking pretty bleak for the globalist jet setters at the Davos Economic Forum just hours ago, but President Trump announced today that he won't use force to acquire Greenland, and he further announced that a framework is close for easing U.S. security concerns re: Greenland, so his proposed tariffs against European countries that sent troops to Greenland to deter U.S. aggression are to be shelved.  Well!  It seems to me that taking force AND tariffs off the table basically obliterates any leverage the U.S. might have to demand that the Danes hand over Greenland, so the question would be: what do we get in return for this uncharacteristic niceness?  Not territorial sovereignty over the whole of Greenland, surely, but maybe privileged military and economic access to the island?  Time will tell...  I'm not sure whether this represents brilliant diplomacy on Trump's part, or "chickening out", for which he's famous in some circles, but time will tell...

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cgezx40r7d7o

In other news, the Clintons have been found in contempt of Congress, which means that the DOJ has at least the option of pursuing criminal charges against them.  Boy, oh boy!  Presumably, negotiations will continue, at least for a time, but we may soon find out just how serious Trump and Bondi are about "vengeance"!

One Year In...

Friends, Happy Anniversary!  That's the one year anniversary of DJT taking office, of course.  What an exciting year it's been!  Somehow, improbably, most liberals haven't yet fled to exile in Canada or Denmark.  In fact, some of them think they've wrestled back the political initiative from Trump and the MAGA movement.  We'll see about that in November.  What we know for sure is that the policy wins that Trump has racked up have been innumerable and way more impressive than during his first term.  The courts and Congress have been more acquiescent, and that's part of it, but Trump himself has also been way more disciplined, focused, and simply competent.  Hallelujah, I say!  Long may it last!

https://www.cbsnews.com/live-updates/trump-white-house-press-briefing-davos-greenland/

In other news, the DOJ has subpoenaed a variety of Minnesota public officials, all of them dastardly Dems, for their role in allegedly obstructing ICE's enforcement operations there.  This will not be an easy case to make, and who knows if it will lead to prosecutions, but even shaking the tree and forcing these latter-day Bolsheviks to pony up their private communications could prove...sobering, especially for them!

Finally, this article reflects on what a poor job colleges are doing preparing graduates for the reality of the new, AI-infused workplace.  The value of book learning has been declining, in the eyes of students and potential employers, for a long time, but AI is accelerating the trend.  Perceptive students are even asking themselves what use they can be to their prospective corporate masters, in an age when generative AI can do pretty much everything that they can do, sometimes better, and almost always a lot cheaper.  Frankly, I'm not just asking "what is college for?", I'm beginning to ask "what are humans for?"  What I mean is that, if we eliminate religious commitments, family duties, and work obligations from the roster of human preoccupations, as many people already have or are about to, then what's left???  Hmm.

Arctic Chill

Friends, you may have noticed that a bunch of European countries just sent paltry expeditionary forces -- mere handfuls of troops -- to Greenland, in a move that they say is a sign of how seriously they take Greenland's defense against Russia and China.  Instead, President Trump seems to interpret this as an affront, i.e as a gambit aimed more at deterring U.S. aggression than anything from our non-NATO foes.  And in all likelihood he's right.  Trump therefore decided to threaten these European "friends" with tariffs, unless and until the U.S. demand to control Greenland is met.  Wow!  Trump says the Euro-weenies were "playing a dangerous game" when they decided to send troops to our doorstep, and I tend to agree.  It was a dumb move.  Having said that, provoking yet another trade war, or an actual war, with our erstwhile allies and partners could turn out to be "beyond stupid" as well, as (Republican) Senator Thom Tillis so memorably put it.  I think Trump needs to confront a hard truth: Denmark and its European confederates aren't going to hand over Greenland politely.  Trump will have to take it, if he's determined to have it, and that means he'd have to brave all the potential consequences.  If he's not that brave, then opening this can of worms in the first place was, if not "beyond stupid", at the very least ill-advised.

In other news, this poll reveals how the Venezuelans are feeling about the U.S. capture of "El Presidente" Nicolas Maduro: they love it!  However, they also desperately want regime change and genuine democracy, which so far Delcy Rodriguez shows no inclination to grant.

NASA is getting tantalizingly close to a return to the Moon -- for the first time in 50 years!  About time, I say.  Might we have bases on the lunar surface by the time J.D. Vance takes office?  I think we might!  Next stop: Mars!!!

Finally, I was back in action today on the Newsmakers show.  Brian and I discussed the outrageous, lawless anti-ICE protests taking place around the country, the stakes in our battle to acquire Greenland, the seismic shifts taking place in British politics, and so much more!

God Helps Those Who Help Themselves?

Friends, after declaring to the Iranian people, now in revolt against their theocratic rulers, that "help is on the way", it appears Trump has pulled the plug on that help, at least in the sense of military action.  Trump has drawn a red line on the (mass) execution of protestors, which is nice, as far as it goes, but it doesn't bring us any closer to regime change in Iran, which is what the Iranian people and sensible Americans want.  The sad part is that the moment may already have passed, and thus a golden opportunity to split the regime and cause its collapse may be behind us.  There are good reasons to intervene and not to intervene, but promising "help" and failing to deliver it is frankly shameful, if you ask me.  I hope President Trump follows the advice of Iran's Shah-in-exile and authorizes strikes against those elements of the Iranian leadership that have the most blood on their hands.

Like Rats Fleeing a Sinking Ship...

Friends, today there was a VERY high profile defection from Britain's withering Conservative Party to its vibrant, expanding Reform Party, led by our old pal Nigel Farage, Mr. Brexit himself.  Robert Jenrick was part of the Conservatives' "shadow cabinet" and a leading candidate for party leader last time around.  The fact that he's given up on the Tories is hugely significant and could presage a complete collapse for Britain's mainstay right-wing party, which has carried the conservative/Conservative banner since Victorian times.  In a sense, the rise of Reform and the decline of the Conservatives suggests that even bigger changes may be coming to British politics than we've seen stateside in recent years, and we've seen a bunch!!!

https://www.bbc.com/news/live/crmdmkg8gymt

In other news, "popular", i.e. carefully cultivated, resistance to ICE's presence in Minneapolis may be increasing, and Trump says that he might have no choice but to invoke the Insurrection Act and deploy active-duty troops to restore order.  That would be a big step.  Do the lefties really want to invite this form of escalation?  I wouldn't be surprised if they tap the brakes on their little revolution long enough to avoid it, but then again they may feel that the atmospherics of a "civil war", if not necessarily the reality of it, will accrue to their political advantage.  And I suppose it could, but that would be a very dangerous game to play.

Contemptible!

Friends, nailing any Democrat to the wall, legally speaking, is about as easy as beating him or her to death with a wet spaghetti noodle.  DJT's, and the DOJ's, attempts at "retribution" against the Left have so far been a big disappointment, as we all know.  Having said that, our old pal Bill Clinton just handed us a gift.  He ignored a Congressional subpoena to testify about his association with Jeffrey Epstein.  What that means is that he's in contempt of Congress, and he's essentially daring the DOJ to prosecute him.  And why not???  The dastardly Dems did the exact same thing to Steve Bannon.  Who wants to see Slick Willy behind bars?  Now's your chance...

https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2026/01/13/bill-clinton-under-contempt-of-congress-after-ignoring-bipartisan-subpoena/

In other news, President Trump is assuring the long-suffering people of Iran that "help is on the way", but help of what kind???  A little lethal force, judiciously applied, might be enough in this situation to bring Iran's theocratic regime crashing down.  The key might well be to make fruitful contacts in the Iranian military and police, and thereby to facilitate a coup d'etat.  Are there cooler heads inside the government to whom we can appeal, and who realize that the time has come to rethink their allegiances?  I hope so.  Otherwise, the only way to transform Iran will be via a bloody, and possibly protracted, revolution.

The Beginning of the End?

Friends, those protests in Iran just keep escalating in intensity, and that puts DJT in a tight spot: he said he would use force against the regime if it slaughtered dissidents, and that's exactly what it's doing, so...  Will he use force, and, if so, to what effect?  This seems like a golden opportunity to topple a hated regime, and it would be dreadful to miss it, but on the other hand we want to be judicious about stepping into a potential quagmire and doing more harm than good.  What's the right course?  Darned if I know!

https://www.breitbart.com/middle-east/2026/01/12/estimates-say-iran-has-killed-up-to-2000-as-regime-claims-protests-under-control/

In other news, the mainstream media is getting highly agitated about sexualized deepfake images generated by X's A.I. platform known as Grok.  There is widespread talk of banning X altogether in response, which naturally would suit the leftist authoritarians very nicely.  Frankly, I'm surprised that more countries haven't banned X already.  You'd think they'd take any excuse, and excuses aren't hard to come by these days.  I advise Elon to keep fighting the good fight!  Sooner or later they'll have an election in the U.K., which is on the frontline of censorship efforts, and our good friend Nigel Farage may be in a position to set things right.

https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2026/01/12/uk-speech-regulator-launches-investigation-into-elon-musks-x/

The Europeans, and the establishment types in this country, are by no means happy with President Trump's aggressive talk re: Greenland.  They believe that the use of force to take over Greenland would blow up the whole Western alliance.  Well, in that case, maybe the Danes should man up and consider selling the island, after all?  There's definitely some three-dimensional chess going on here.  U.S. acquisition of Greenland would be historic, and I would remind DJT and everyone reading this that hurting the feelings of the global elite is a very, very easy thing to do.  You can do it by invading Greenland, sure, but their hackles are elevated on a more or less continuous basis these days anyway, which means that there might be little downside to taking Greenland in a lightning assault.  I mean, what is Europe going to do to us?  Whine? Refuse to accept our complimentary security guarantees?  Oh yeah, that would really hit us where it hurts...NOT!!!  Again, I think it's much more likely that the Danes will consider handing over the island peacefully, because that would be much more dignified, and less destabilizing to that "rules-based world order" they love so much.  Let's give Trump some leeway to sort this out and see where it goes.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/us-officials-to-meet-with-danish-officials-wednesday-about-greenland-sources-say/ar-AA1U0CmA

Finally, the DOJ has enraged a whole lot of Democrats and more than a few RINOs by announcing a criminal investigation into Jerome Powell for his remarks to Congress about the reconstruction project at the Fed H.Q.  Now, if he really did break the law eggregiously, I'm fine with him facing the consequences, but this does feel like gratuitous legal harrassment, especially considering that Powell is about to leave office.  Who really cares how much the Fed's makeover costs???  Trump's attacks against Powell have been more than a little irrational, if you ask me.  The Fed has a responsibility to keep the economy humming along by lowering rates, sure, but it also has a duty to keep inflation in check by keeping rates high.  It's a balance that's called for, in other words, and reasonable people can disagree about how to strike that balance.  Trump, as per usual, seems to believe that anyone who contradicts him is crazy, evil, or stupid...and that may be true in 90% of cases, but this might be one of the few where Trump himself is in the wrong.  Just sayin'.
