Democracy Dies in...Europe?

Friends, you won't want to miss the latest Newsmaker broadcast, in which I speculate on AOC's chances to become a U.S. Senator and/or President of the United States.  I also analyze the consequences of Mike Waltz's demotion, the ongoing animosity between the Trump Administration and obstreperous federal judges, the futility of the endless barrage of attacks against President Trump, the phony "cuts" to Medicaid that lefties are incensed about, the meaning of the big rallies featuring AOC and Bernie Sanders, the ambiguity of the Trump Administration's stance vis-a-vis Ukraine, the prospects of a resolution to the US-China trade war, and the overall state of the economy.

It's classic Waddy, folks!  Don't miss it.

In other news, anti-democratic forces are conspiring to rig elections in Europe to ensure that conservatives and populists stay on the sidelines and out of government.  (The situation in Brazil is even worse.)  Take note of Romania's presidential election.  The most popular candidate has been barred from participating because...Russia Russia Russia!  And in Germany there are efforts afoot to expel members of the popular AfD party from the police and civil service.  Hey, maybe that could boost the AfD's poll numbers even more?  The problem, of course, is that, although Euro-Trumpers are winning more and more citizens over, almost nowhere can they command a majority, and failing that the establishment is usually in a position to join forces to preserve the status quo.

  1. Dr. Waddy from Jack: As usual: very much of substance in your latest Newsmaker broadcast; I'll be as presumptuous as to comment at length tomorrow but for now: Your assertion that a dem could win in 2028 is well supported and an appalling possibilty is gaining credibility, that of AOC being elected President. WHY?

Because she is a DEMAGOGUE and perhaps already a uniquely dynamic one in American political history. Demagogues are driven mostly by emotion and that's her alright.

  2. Dr. Waddy from Jack: One disadvantage AOC would have as a Presidential candidate is that she would be a Senator from NY, a state despised by much of America for its imperiously malign effect on the country already (eg. Schumer and Jeffries)

She would at some point find it necessary to make a disingenuous turn to the right to have any chance in the general election. She would have to wait until she has established herself as the successor to Sanders and Hillary because she would lose some support from people drawn to her simply for her mindless passion .

I wonder; do some of these Dem District Judges really think President Trump is violating the Constitution with his Executive Orders? I think with many of them its simply a pretext for "by any means necessary" desperate radical resistance to the President's policies. Devotion to "Critical Legal Studies" frees their minds to rule as they personally please. The only effective counter can be to have Scotus deny them this absurd power to negate Presidential will.

Characteristic far leftist maximalism in their reactions to any assertion or action manifested by conservatives is yet another confirmation of their fundamental reliance upon juvenile emotional onslaught to get their way.In this they follow the example set by the criminals they so exalt. And I agree with you: we have nothing to gain by accomodating or appeasing them; their mindlessly hyperbolic stance on everything is assured. The far left is captured by this fault; they cannot help themselves.Coupled with the fact that DJT need not worry about reelection, this affords him very much latitude.

They are fanatics and must be politically overpowered by America or they will make serfs of all of us.

  3. Dr. Waddy from Jack: To me, for what its worth, a Cuomo is a Cuomo is a Cuomo. Yeah, Cuomo the commentator has made a perhaps only facile turn toward common sense; he might even be sincere about it. B ut he displays the same bug eyed , cavernous mouthed self righteousness which made his father and brother so obnoxious.Cuomos have worn out their welcome even in N.Y, by their imperious posturing and I wish all of them would have the decency to repair to private life.

Greenwald is right ,I think; AOC and Sanders are preaching to the choir. Sanders may well realize he's too old for all this and he's passing the mantle.

Iran has to know that Israel will never trust them with nuclear weapons. No 'mutual assured destruction" stance with the Israelis. And if the mullahs have any sense they must know by now that DJT means what he says. Iran better find a face saving way out of this fix; they have to know what is in store if they go nuke.

  4. Dr. Waddy from Jack: Perhaps the same presumptuous leftist overreach which drove the Brits out of the EU and elected DJT has convinced an ever increasing, perhaps decisive number of Europeans that the left always intends eventual totalitarian takeover.

Germany: so many significant factors at work. How much of the inhumanity of German government from 1933 to 1945 (and 1945 - 1989 in the East) is attributable to essentials of German national character which MIGHT still obtain? I think this question must be asked if
modern united Germany displays any tendency smacking of overauthoritarianism or even, by implication, antisemitism (eg. as possibly manifested in perceived governmental bias in favor of Islam reflected in suppression of anti "gast arbeiter" conviction. Gonna lose power here so I'll continue in a separate comment.

  5. Dr. Waddy from Jack: So far so gut. With Germany's preeminence now in Western Europe and its historically proven record of almost incredible dynamism when the country is motivated and led strongly, the Europe and beyond must pay close attention to German matters. I'd bet those countries which felt the German boot within living memory are doing so.

That said, I think it also highly plausible that a high civilization like that of Germany, having known the very worst kind of misrule, is perhaps better able to resolve never again to tolerate its like, than those countries lacking such traumatizing experience. And the historical, political and economic ills which enabled the rise of the Nazis and the cuckooing Commies do not now obtain.

  6. Dr. Waddy from Jack: Filibuster in the Senate is pretty well presumed now; its a close to routine process for legislation which is at all controversial. Accordingly, legislative strategists give it due consideration in their plans.

Similarly, at least for now, Presidential Executive Orders are promulgated with the assumption that cynically chosen far left Federal District Court judges will be "persuaded"to exercise their absurd power to block them. Pending to be hoped inevitable Scotus or Congressional restoration of those Courts to their subordinate status , that's just the way it is right now and of course its part of the planning which precedes the enactment of EOs.

So why enact them in the first place, given this onerous reality? First, because they are now necessary procedural prerequisites to accomplishing the stated objective of an EO through higher Federal judiciary or ,if necessary, legislation. They are far more immediate than the legislative process though and they do have some immediate remedial effect (eg. reactions to the prospects of them becoming permanent and summarily aroused , sometimes long suppressed, public outrage). Second , they help to publicize and clarify issues by trumpeting the views of both sides in our intense political conflict.

The far left's accusation of dictatorship in President Trump's extensive use of EOs is of course pro forma and completely disingenuous. In power ,radicals are the definition of tyrants. And since they give the President no choice , since he can expect their automatic excoriation and obfuscation , he need not worry about provoking them. They have
long been demonstrably and irrevocably devoted to destroying him and all he stands for. The dems' apparent decision to blithely proceed even further to the far left which hobbled them in the election betrays strong reluctance to do otherwise and affords the Administration valuable continued practice in countering their always reflexive and emotionally charged anarchism.

  7. Dr. Waddy from Jack: Also, the President's unapologetic onslaught of EOs always presents the chance of completely unbalancing the emotions of far leftists and sending them over the political precipice.

  8. And besides, President Trump's EOs are dang good for our morale! Jack

  9. Jack, I agree that AOC's connections to deep blue New York would hinder her national ambitions...but not necessarily enough to defeat her. (Think: Barack. Ick!)

It's an interesting question how the U.S. and Israel would react if Iran tested a nuke. No nuclear power has ever been forcibly disarmed of its nukes before. That would be a mighty risky mission to undertake.

Agreed: Trump's flurry of Executive Orders do him and his movement no harm. Many will be torpedoed by the courts, but so what? The bigger question is how much Trump is prepared to defy the courts, and there are strong arguments for and against an aggressive, even "authoritarian" approach.
