Friends, I'm sure by now you've heard the harrowing tale of a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv that almost crashed due to the Islamist mania of one of its pilots. Luckily, the other pilot, and various passengers, managed to salvage the situation and save the lives of everyone on board. Kudos to the captain of the flight, an Indian national who was stabbed but still had the presence of mind to do what needed to be done.

In other news, some lefties are discovering that "equity" in our public schools, which invariably comes at the expense of educational rigor, might not be in the best interests of every child, including their own! Well, elite lefties found this out years ago, and they've addressed the problem by sending their kids to private school, while insisting that everyone not "of means" be saddled with ineffectual, doctrinaire public schools. And in most of the country that's exactly how it is: for most parents, private school and/or homeschooling are kept intentionally out of reach by the education establishment.

RAY TO DR. WADDY AND JACK
ReplyDeleteThe Fly Dubai incident is a perfect example of religious fanaticism. In this case, a Hindu pilot and a Muslim co-pilot. These two religions hate each other with a passion. The slaughters of the petition of India is an excellent example of this. Any questions?
Dr. Waddy, Ray, et al. The Hindu pilot apparently defended his life and, yes, those of his passengers as would anyone. Islamist terrorist vindictiveness on the part of the CoPilot might have been more likely directed at non militant Dubai than to a Hindu.
ReplyDeleteThe India - Pakistan Partition following independence , with its massive and summary exchange of populations , was terribly murderous but much of that was generated among both Hindus and Muslims by grief and resentment at having to leave one's home., usually after having sacrificed most of one's often painfully accumulated property, goods and constructive relationships in the process. Many South Asians had little concern about their central government; a post independence survey by British sociologists revealed that a majority of the people in then mostly agricultural South Asia they interviewed were unaware that the British had even ruled India .
India and Pakistan do have tenuous relations but they have managed to avoid the very worst (nuclear) of which they are capable. I think Muslims do reside in India but I am not sure about Hindus in Pakistan and Bangla Desh. I think Bengali civilization , now resident in both India and Bangla Desh, contains shared deep roots. I was privileged to have taken Asian Philosophy ( necessarily a very tentative introduction) from Dr. Amiya Chakravarti, an intimate of Mahatma Gandhi who was with Gandhi on the Salt March. Dr. Chakravarti was also the literary Secretary to Rabindranath Tagore , a revered Bengali poet and ,I believe, a Hindu. Surely Tagore's influence remains in mostly Muslim Bangla Desh.
In my study for a BA in Asian Studies I took several courses on South Asia. They were of course only an introduction but at least from that and my cursory subsequent knowledge of South Asia I am unaware of a significant Hindu terrorist faction there. Perhaps in ethnic Tamil Southern India and Sri Lanka but I think that involves ethnic Tamil defense against perceived domination by the Hindi speaking majority in South Asia. I'll read more about it. I lived for several months in Singapore , which is the home of many Muslims and Hindus and was not aware of active hostility between them.
Dr. Waddy: The "American " far left is loath to give up any iota of its governing principle on education. That is: " poor performance on the part of any group once oppressed in our civilization is but due to the completely unmitigated persistence of oppression. Accordingly,a justified response is to administratively guarantee the provision to the oppressed of the credentials necessary for personal advancement in America. Performance in America's still unjust educational establishment is unjustly measured by traditional standards and they must be abandoned. Subsequently documented failure to succeed in higher education and employment is yet another manifestation of purposeful pre
ReplyDeletejudgement of oppressed groups and society must engineer and firmly enact remedial measures to assure the equity which must be modern civilization's irrefutable object"
This is a principle which dominates the American academy and public education. Many of those in charge in these fields have their entire careers invested in the sanctity of it and are quick to suppress any subordinates who maintain that it is discredited, both by the common sense which is by definition unendurably heretic in such a setting and by creditable empirical evidence supporting the bankruptcy of their doctrinally and vindictively dictated "verities". Their denial is reflexive and unshakeable and can be discontinued only by disempowering them . Since they dominate the education of professionals to their biases that is an exceedingly difficult task and our present national administration is to be praised for initiating it.
