Friends, the credulity of lefties sometimes defies belief.  They will swallow ANYTHING that fits with their agenda, or which fulfills their stated desires or subliminal wishes.  Case in point: in the last few days numerous "intellectually superior" (by their accounts) progressives have speculated that, because Donald Trump hasn't made any public appearances in days, he must be dead.  No doubt some of them speculated further on what had killed him.  A Russian spy satellite fell out of the sky and squashed him?  An oversized bronze eagle fell off his mantle and impaled him with its beak?  He spontaneously combusted due to insufficient consumption of mRNA vaccines?  All plausible scenarios!  But no: El Presidente is alive and well.  The lefties will have to move on to the next fever dream...

Finally, here's an interesting analysis of the rise of Red China's navy.  It has already bested us in total number of ships, but of course that is a very crude measure of naval strength.  My guess, in fact, is that ships won't matter much in the next big naval war, in the sense that missiles will make quick work of many of them.  The country that has the better missiles and the more sophsticated and robust targeting systems will rule the waves, if you ask me.

Friends, I've been having a delightful summer, full of adventures with friends and family, and I hope you have too.  Here's a picture of me at the National Bank Open in Toronto, a first-rate tennis tournament just a few hours from where I live in Western New York.  The point is that, despite our political engagement, we conservatives are living our lives, prioritizing those we care about, and making the most of the all too brief sojourn we have on this jewel of a planet, instead of spending our days wringing our hands and shaking our fists like certain hardcore leftists we know.  So that's my advice of the day to anyone who cares to listen: politics is interesting, but don't let it distract you from, well, YOU, and those in your circle who mean the world to you, as they should.

Friends, in a stunning reversal of fortunes in the culture wars, conservatives won a massive victory today as Cracker Barrel decided to reinstate its traditional logo.  What's more, they did so after President Trump urged them to.  It's almost as if a major corporation is...listening to the American people, and taking seriously what their elected President says.  Unheard of!!!

Friends, remember when New York Judge Engoron was tormenting DJT in court, as he faced fraud charges, and many of us speculated that Trump would be held in contempt and jailed long before the 2024 election?  Well, we've come a long way since then, and by "we" I mean AMERICA!!!  Witness the fact that New York State Supreme Court judges today tossed out the $500 million judgement against Trump and his business.  It wasn't a total victory, as the finding of fraud was not in itself invalidated, but the extreme remedy favored by Engoron was exposed for the political stunt that it was.  Kudos to these leftist judges for doing the right thing/seeing the writing on the wall.  It's extraordinary how much lawfare was thrown at Trump leading up to the 2024 election, and it's equally extraordinary that he survived and prospered, and that so many voters stuck by him.  Well done, 'Merica!

Doing the Ukraine Shuffle

 

Friends, President Trump may never before have pirouetted quite as much as he has in the last few days, and that's because various forces and interest groups are pulling him in a plethora of different directions vis-a-vis the Russia-Ukraine War and how it can be ended.  Trump is talking tough, and he's being conciliatory.  He's ruling out Ukrainian membership in NATO, and, with the other hand, he's proffering the possibility of U.S. troop deployments to help guarantee Ukraine's independence.  Could Ukraine end up with an effective alliance with the West, policed by actual British and French troops, perhaps accompanied by Americans?  If so, that would seem like a monumental blow to Russian pride and a major threat to Russia itself.  On the other hand, to secure that Western commitment, what would Ukraine be willing to give up, territorially?  It's a truly byzantine set of conundrums.  Compounding my bafflement is the fact that many of the interested parties probably don't want peace at all, and are quite prepared to keep slugging it out indefinitely.  Is there a point, however, where Ukraine or Russia simply can't take any more?  Is there a point where Western European powers feel they have to intervene directly in the conflict?  Is there a point where Trump, in particular, throws up his hands and walks away?  Hey, if I had the answer to any of these questions, I'd share them with you, but, alas, I'm just an informed observer of these world-historical events.

No Deal!

 

Friends, DJT and ole Vladimir had their powwow in Alaska, and no definitive results were obtained.  In other words, the war in Ukraine goes on.  When you consider that some Western nations, notably Britain and France, seem to be itching to send troops to Ukraine to "police" any ceasefire or settlement, you can see why Russia might be inclined to continue fighting.  Western forces encamped in Ukraine, next to the Russian border, would arguably be WORSE, from the Russian perspective, than the formal admission of Ukraine to NATO.  In any case, Putin may still feel as though he can beat Ukraine, and, if he can have the whole enchilada, why settle for just one bite?  Possibly Russia's intention in showing up for this summit was to keep the West, and Trump in particular, talking, so that further and stiffer sanctions don't materalize.  What will Trump's next move be?  Darned if I know!

Illegal Immigration...In Reverse!

 

Friends, we're getting our first real sense of how many illegal immigrants have "self-deported" since DJT took office in January, and the numbers are STUNNING!!!  The headline figure of 1.6 million may be misleading for a variety of reasons, but the fact is that hundreds of thousands of illegals appear to have vacated the country.  If you put this in context, probably only around 100,000 have been deported in the same period.  This means that Trump's illegal immigration "body language" and messaging has been even more effective than his policy changes.  In a way, this shouldn't surprise us.  Look how few people are coming across the southern border right now: virtually none, and that isn't because we built a wall -- it's because Trump articulated clearly to the whole world that unauthorized migrants were no longer welcome and would be promptly expelled.  Well, quite a few illegals who've been living and working here are getting the same message, and they're voting with their feet.  This leads to the follow-up question: how low can the numbers of (remaining) illegal immigrants go?  Somewhere close to zero, I would hope.  I can't tell you how positive this news is, because, if we had to rely on deportations alone to solve the problem, we would never get close to a solution.  The real answer to illegal immigration has always been to persuade current and potential interlopers that it simply isn't worth the bother to break our immigration laws.  In other words, we need to make the illegals do our work for us.  So far, so good!

Capital Crackdown

 

Friends, today, in a move that will make the few liberal heads that haven't already exploded...explode, DJT announced the deployment of National Guard forces to bolster crime fighting efforts in the District of Columbia AND he assumed direct federal control of the District's Metro Police.  Lefties counter that crime in D.C. is "no big deal", which may be true if you have Secret Service protection, but which hasn't been accurate for ordinary citizens for a long time.  Will this scrap ultimately lead to the end of "home rule" for D.C. and the federalization of the city?  Some have speculated that most of the District could be returned to Maryland, and D.C.'s three electoral votes could be assigned more narrowly to...Donald Trump's bedroom?  I like this idea, personally.  We'll see how matters develop from here.

Russia Invades Alaska!!! (By Invitation)

 

Friends, prior to 1867, as most people know, Russia controlled Alaska.  Now they're up to their old tricks again!  That's because President Trump has agreed to a summit with President Putin in Alaska next Friday.  The main topic of conversation will be a negotiated settlement to the Russia-Ukraine War.  Might Trump offer Putin the Aleutian Islands as a sweetner to get him to give up the Donbass?  Probably not.  The outlines of a settlement are starting to come into clearer focus, but then again Russia could simply be playing for time and trying to avoid even more crippling sanctions.  Either way, a face-to-face meeting between Trump and Putin will be a sight to behold!

Friends, the basic ground rules of American politics may be shifting under our collective feet.  That's because, not only are several red states gearing up to redraw their Congressional districts to give greater advantage to the GOP, but President Trump is calling for a redo of the 2020 Census, which could give even more seats to red states and fewer to blue states.  Can you REALLY redraw your state's Congressional map whenever you want, even right before a midterm election?  Maybe.  Can you REALLY redo a Census, and exclude illegal immigrants from the count?  Maybe.  Republicans are testing the waters, and, if all their stratagems come to fruition, the Dems may find it very hard to compete in 2026 and beyond.  Wouldn't that be a pity???

The Nuclear Option Isn't Much of an Option

 

Friends, today residents of Hiroshima are marking 80 years since that city was devastated by a U.S. atomic bomb.  It's a great opportunity to reflect on the legacy of nuclear weaponry and its ongoing role in...keeping the peace?  Yes, nukes put us all at risk of a radioactive apocalypse, but, because of their deterrent power, they have also kept us safe and sound for 80 years and counting.  A war between NATO and Russia over Ukraine would be far more likely if nukes weren't keeping both sides minimally "honest" and circumspect.  Personally, I believe that nukes will always be with us, and most of the time they serve to make life better (and longer) by preventing war itself.  I say "most of the time" because, sooner or later, someone, somewhere will let loose with another nuclear bomb.  Let's hope it isn't any time soon.

Friends, Democrats are outraged (yawn!) because President Trump has fired the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, because she released a set of new jobs numbers that he regards as inaccurate and defamatory to him and his administration.  Are his charges valid?  That I couldn't say.  I tend to trust government statistics.  Can the books be cooked, to a certain extent?  Sure, but it's hard to make a recession look like a boom, or vice versa, so there's only so much that you can accomplish with such chicanery, and I'm not sure why you'd try it when we're a year and a half from the next election...  Bottom line: Trump's politicization of economic statistics will make even fewer people trust "the numbers", and there aren't many people trusting anything or anyone as it is.  It's a race to the bottom, or so it seems to me.

Speaking of cynicism, Republicans in Texas are getting closer and closer to passing a reapportionment of their Congressional districts designed to favor their fellow Republicans.  The GOP could secure five additional seats in the House in 2026, which would make Democrats furious and would tempt blue states to retaliate in kind.  Texas Democrats are boycotting the state legislature to try to deny Republicans a quorum, and as a result those Dems could be fined or even arrested.  This could get mighty ugly!  The question is: could it work as a stratagem to maintain GOP control of the House of Representatives???  Only time will tell.

China and India aren't liking the idea of paying massive "secondary tariffs" that would be designed to punish them for buying Russian oil.  On the other hand, they aren't willing to stop buying that oil either, meaning that the U.S. and China and India are basically engaged in a global game of chicken.  Would the U.S. really risk a massive trade war with China AND India, in order to increase financial pressure on Putin's regime?  China and India seem to regard these threats as a bluff, and, I must say, I suspect that Trump doesn't mean what he says in this case either.  I think he may be engaged in a last ditch effort to bring Ukraine and Russia to the bargaining table.  If that effort fails, then I'm not sure what he'll do, but cutting off trade with China and India doesn't seem very likely, and wouldn't be terribly smart.
