The Collusion Delusion Isn't Dead Yet

Friends, we now have word that the Mueller Report will hit newsstands (are there still newsstands?) on Thursday.  You better believe everyone in Washington, D.C. will be reading it, and the spin will be dizzying!  Republicans will find exoneration; Democrats will almost certainly find collusion and obstruction of justice.  The facts, of course, do not support either charge, but in politics facts are secondary to wish fulfillment, and so we should expect nothing less than a firestorm.  In the end, I believe that the impetus for impeachment is gone.  Other than hearings and investigations, President Trump has nothing to fear for the next year and a half.  Nonetheless, the last part of this week will be interesting.  As the article below suggests, there is ample reason to suspect that Mueller will have added a few nuggets of cloak-and-dagger innuendo to his report.  The goal would be to land a few punches on our valiant leader, even if Mueller can't deliver a knockout blow.  So...beware the Ides of April, for they portend a brief upsurge in Trump-Russia conspiracy theories.

  1. Dr. Waddy: One thing is certain: the Mueller report could duplicate, word for word, Don Quixote and the Dems would "find" in it reason to continue their increasingly discredited campaign to bring the President down, ala Nixon. They have bet all on this and they are desperate.

Impeachment would be an objectively futile effort as it would have no chance of conviction in the Senate. It would be a very risky move for the Dems to initiate it as a means of defeating the President in 2020 as it might incense his very considerable and so far immovable base ("he says things I want to say to those jerks!") This means ALOT!

The hurly burly will continue until after the 2020 election and it hinges on this, I think: will a decisive majority of the voters believe there is something "there"? Looks like alot of them did in 2018. But the election is a long way away and what future watershed events in this powerful nonsense may we expect? Perhaps none as important as this report and its contested interpretation.

  2. I agree, Jack. I think the issuance of the Mueller report will be the last major milestone -- and the last hurrah -- for the "collusion delusion." Having said that, you're spot on that the Democrats won't let it go at that. "Compromising" Russian ties will still be explored by the Dems ad nauseum, and a cornucopia of other scandals will be unveiled/concocted. They're like a dog with a bone.

I really do think impeachment is a dead letter, though. It was never likely. Now it would be a totally wasted effort, and Nancy knows it. Someone like Tlaib might force the Dems to vote on it at some stage, but it won't get anywhere.
