Circling the Wagons

Friends, in my latest interview with Brian O'Neil at WLEA in Hornell, we discussed a number of topics, including the raid on the office of Trump's attorney Michael Cohen (pictured above on the far right), "catch and release," and trade.  You won't want to miss it!

On a side note, I wish to convey my good wishes to House Speaker Paul Ryan, who is retiring and refocusing his life on his family.  Frankly, I don't blame him.  Washington is a cesspool, and being the Speaker of the House has got to worse than herding cats.  Ryan has served his country well, and I sincerely hope we haven't seen the last of him.

  2. Please excuse that, Dr. Waddy, I wanted to sign it with my name, not my Blogger name.

Dr. Waddy, I respectfully disagree with your thoughts about Paul Ryan...I think he started off being a good guy, but the "cesspool" got to him. Remember, he is part of the DC machine who kept Planned Parenthood in the budget, among other things too.

Its a travesty that Cohen was raided, there goes the thought of "Attorney/Client Privilege." I haven't listened to your latest radio interview, but I will.

  3. Thank you, Linda! I was reading today that the Cohen raid has probably convinced Trump not to sit for an interview with Mueller. I approve. Nothing good can come of talking with a prosecutor determined to destroy you... I also read Limbaugh's advice, which is that Trump start handing out pardons ASAP. Perhaps he ought to. Then again, a little more waiting and this fiasco might be over.

I understand how you feel about Ryan. To be sure, he didn't accomplish everything he might have. Given that Congress is unruly, and given that its approval rating is in the teens, I still think his performance was at least adequate.

  4. Dr. Waddy: He gave a very deserved pardon today to Scooter Libby. When Libby was convicted I wrote in a column I had back then that I was unaware that perjury was still a felony because though "Bill" Clinton (I can't stand using the familiar diminutive with someone I despise as much I do him so I put it quotes)was convicted of it he received punishment appropriate for only a misdemeanor. I think it fine to bid good wishes to Paul Ryan, a very good man, but I am glad he is leaving and I wish he would do it immediately so we could persuade Trey Gowdy to run for Speaker. Ryan is dutiful but is not a warrior, as he proved when he allowed the bumptious and sanctimonious Joe Biden to humiliate him in the 2012 debate. I know Gowdy has said he is leaving but maybe he would answer the clarion call - we need him. Steve Scalise and maybe Kevin McCarthy might do well but Gowdy is an hombre and that's what we need in this war, right now. A dark horse could be our own Tom Reed; he's been a faithful Trump supporter from before it was prudent to be so. He seems wishy washy at times but sometimes still waters run deep. He handled stereotypical Ithaca radical Martha Roberts (how arrogantly presumptuous it is that any of that ilk should say they can "represent" us) with consummate skill four years ago; I saw it in person.

  5. I must admit, I don't have a favorite in the leadership race. I probably should. I doubt very much that it will be anyone other than McCarthy, since Scalise has bowed out. A "warrior" sounds good, I agree, but the sausage-making that goes on in Congress might not get done under those circumstances. Frankly, I'll be happy with anyone who isn't a Democrat!

  6. Dr. Waddy: Didn't know Scalise had bowed out. Probably will be McCarthy but I wish they'd do it now. Gowdy probably isn't available but I wonder if he might be a Supreme Court prospect. I'd love to see him questioning devotees of the "anything goes" Critical Legal Studies school as they front. Went to Tom Reed's Town Meeting yesterday. He is an increasingly skilled combination of solid conservative values, legislative acumen (he ascended to the Ways and Means Committee in jack time, so to speak)and the ability to express and defend his views with clarity and documented credibility. Really like to see him become Whip or even Majority Leader. But I agree, any Republican is a good choice; no Democrat is (though Pelosi would be hilarious to see and hear and might actually help us).

  7. Very true, Jack -- another Pelosi speakership could be a godsend politically, but some things are more important than politics, so let's hope it never comes to pass. That's good to hear about Tom Reed. I hope one day I get to meet him.
