Friends, the Democratic National Convention is now in the books, and it's official: it will be Trump-Pence versus Biden-Harris. I watched the addresses by Sleepy Joe and the Kamster, and I have a few thoughts.
For one thing, we have to acknowledge that neither Biden nor Harris "dropped the ball" and humiliated themselves. Kamala Harris is a smart woman and a smooth talker. She didn't miss a beat, and she kept things positive and optimistic -- usually a smart move in American politics. She also defied my expectations. I assumed she would be Sleepy Joe's "attack dog," and maybe she will be, but she wasn't at the convention. She seemed like a nice, patriotic lady introducing herself to America. That sort of speech will do the Dems no harm.
Second, Joe didn't crash and burn either. He exceeded my expectations, insofar as he read his speech without tripping over it or having a stroke. He was even coherent. The miracles never cease! And that, I think, is a danger for the GOP: the bar for Joe Biden has been set so low that it won't be that hard for him to meet it, and even rise above it.
Third, Kamala's address was almost entirely lacking in policy prescriptions of any kind. Joe Biden did address policy, but only in the broadest, most schematic terms. He promised to fix every problem, and protect every (popular) interest group, but he said almost nothing about how he would do it. Well, that's par for the course. The American people expect empty platitudes. They got them this week, and how!
Fourth, the DNC was designed to pitch the Democratic Party as a moderate party, despite the fact that it has advanced some of the most radical proposals in our nation's history. The tax increases and curtailments of liberty that the modern Dems would inflict on us would be punishing, and yet you'd never know it listening to their rhetoric, which is all Trump-hatred, on one hand, and sweetness and light, on the other: "compassion", "empathy", "equality", "justice". How nice!
In a nutshell, the DNC was carefully scripted, and it was expertly enacted so as to, well, mislead the American people. It will do the Dems no harm, and, assuming that any undecided voters were watching, it should even do them some good.
The challenge, then, is to confront the voters with what the Dems truly are, and what they truly believe in, when the cameras aren't running, and to expose the emptiness of so much of what they have to say.
The best case scenario, my friends, is that the street thugs who are battling nightly with the brave men and women of law enforcement -- some of them BLM, some Antifa, and some just miscellaneous left-wing nutjobs -- will become the real public face of the American Left. The media wants to avoid that, but let's face it: sometimes Molotov cocktails speak louder than desiccated Delawareans. This may be one of those times.
We shall see. The Dems have thrown down the gauntlet. For the most part, they are going to "play nice", it appears, and let the media do their dirty work for them. Not a bad strategy. We just have to hope that the American people are one step ahead of them.
I happen to agree with mostly everything you said. I just wanted to add; ICK after the 4 days of that nonsense. I am really looking forward to the debates (I still say, there won't be any). Trump gave a nice speech today and I hope and pray he stays on topic; keep it real, keep to the facts and let the others pick them (Biden/Harris) off/tear apart. Something tells me that next weeks RNC Convention won't be as boring.

DeleteI predict a Biden-Harris "victory" in November 2020. Why, because The American people tend to be very fickle, with bouts of attention deficit disorder. Many who voted for Trump have probably been sucked in by the anti-Trump propaganda. Sorry.
Linda, did you really watch most of the DNC? If so, kudos! You have a much stronger stomach than I. Arguably Obama's speech was "newsworthy", but I just couldn't bear the thought of listening to that egomaniac for another second. Trump is right -- Obama's greatest legacy is that he teed up the country for nationalist renewal.
ReplyDeleteRay, say it ain't so! Probably a lot of historical models would agree with you, though. As Biden pointed out, we've had a nasty pandemic and a major economic slump -- in an election year. And, thanks to the gentlemen of the press, Trump wasn't that popular to begin with. If the Dems can't win in 2020, then they really are hopeless dolts. Then again, they nominated Joe "Hopeless Dolt" Biden, so there's reason to be optimistic!
Yes, Dr. Waddy I watched it... one must know what the other side is up too, grin. How can I discuss it / talk about it if I don't know what the he hockey sticks is going on? Sad, my expectations are set so low.
ReplyDeleteSay it ain't so Ray. I hover in between those sentiments. However, the folks I have spoken too 1. Don't want a federal mask mandate (they have head enough of the King Cuomo here) and 2. Read Fox or other news and see the riots going on. Enough is enough. ALSO, with NY state mandating/ordering college students to get tested; majority of parents/students feel this is ok to trample on your civil rights. So, yeah, I see where you think that.
Any thoughts on that Dr. Waddy? I know your employer is mandating these tests be done. I am so glad I graduated when I did. I think I would have to hire an attorney and fight this. I wonder, do you professors have to be tested too?

DeleteIt is certainly not my desire that Joe Biden win anything, except a free trip to a rest home. However, my point is regrettably the fact that a more than large percentage of Americans tend to vote with their emotions. I think this was true with Obama, when people handed The White House too him simply because he was Black, and they thought it was "time for a Black President". The same voting "logic" applies to Biden, and not because of him but because of Kamala. Many voters will simply convince themselves that it is time for woman President or Vice President, and a Black one at that. Trump has been demonized so much that the media mafia has many people believing that he is the "bad guy" and Biden is the "good guy". I do hope I am wrong about my predictions, but forewarned is forearmed, just in case the worst happens. However, I'm sure a lot of people really don't understand what the worst is. Also a lot of good Christian people I know are not going to vote for Biden, because they truly believe that things will get worse under him and then Jesus will come. Yes, millions of people believe that, and have been fed that dispensational and premillenial view for a very long time now. Well, only two more months left.
Let me correct that view about certain Christians. I meant to say, that many will vote for Biden because his election victory will hasten the second coming of Jesus. Others won't vote all because they don't want to hasten the period of the antiChrist.
ReplyDeleteMasks remind me of dog muzzles.
ReplyDeleteI happen to share a lot of your viewpoint(s) Ray. Scary as that may be...sigh. What is the answer? I don't know, I guess we shall see come Nov. I have hope though people see the "truth" aka Socialism is on the rise. Unfort. with the indoctrination of our young folks, and the lies they are taught, Socialism is on the rise and that is all they see and hear. Is Trump a loud mouth? Yes, and I knew that when I voted the first time, is Trump a 'bad orange man' No. I think he was dealt with a bad hand thanks to previous Presidents who were tilting towards Socialism and I include previous Republican presidents. There is a lot of wickedness going on in DC, not all the current Presidents fault.
DeleteAs for Christians, I don't hang around with those who are voting for Biden, the majority of our friends are diehard Trump/Drain the Swamp believers. MOST see the truth out there, and most know the draining the swamp will never be done, regardless who is in office.
It's scary, Ray, truly it is. Thanks for responding back, I enjoy our conversations.
As for the masks; since we are mandated here to wear them-indeed, they are dog muzzles. It seems every single day the King here as more and more edicts or things to say and the majority of folks I have spoken to have had enough. The question will remain until Nov. how much blue will turn purple or red here. Since there are hardly any folks left in NYC. If the Trump signs are any indication, it just might turn purple. I think our King has left a bitter taste in many folks mouths and many think he has overplayed his hand. Taxes are up, utilities, groceries etc...and he has no plan of backing down. Now our Republican mayor (truly a rino) is stating services will be cut by upwards of 30% IF Trump doesn't give Cuomo what he wants. Majority of us think he will soon shut us down again, not that we are truly reopen, mind you.

ReplyDeleteLooks like you are still in New York. Do you have to stay there? If not, try to find a solid red state (good luck) and go there.
yes...and looking...unfort. NY has quarantine issues with many states, like 37, including red states. It does take money to move etc.
DeleteWell good luck to you.
DeleteDr.Waddy et Al from Jack: Here is a tack I'd like to see the President take among many others of the same idea " Consider New York State: their Attorney General, the states lawyer has recently formalized,at the expense all NY taxpayers, her personal political determination to destroy the NRA. She has comically termed it 'a terrorist organization' oh my! In doing so she has labeled the geographical bulk of HER state as the abode of terrorists! Common sense, law abiding gun ownership is of course routine up there. But more, much more, she strives to extend her totalitarian intent and her farleftist bias beyond her state and to us all. Of course she does this with the blessing of her governor, who emotes ' I'm immune from NRA lawsuits' Who, pray, is as above the law as to be immune from lawsuits other than those individuals or corporations protected by statute from civil challenges mounted in bad faith?
ReplyDeleteDr.Waddy et Al from Jack: To continue what I hope the President will say: "... Now, what does this portend? Imagine NY Attorney General James as the Harris appointed AG of the US. She would not hesitate, no, not one minute, to impose her views on the entire country! And this is just a suggestion but most obvious and apparent, of what is in store for all of us if the radical leftist dem ticket wins. Before this NY State was a pitiable spectacle from which you were insulated. If the dems win it is the EXEMPLAR of what would dominate us all. Believe those heralds in the people's republic of ny: they know what they are talking about both in respect to what has happened to them already and in what the future assures. They know: the American Taliban far left knows NO limits!
ReplyDeleteegads, bite your tongue, Jack!!! Scary thoughts, but yes, I see this happening.
DeleteDR. NICK
ReplyDeleteTime to move on to what? How about a list of things you believe Joe and Shrilly Pantsuit might do to wreck the country should he be elected in November 2020.
Thanks.
Hi Linda. Good for you watching the DNC! It's not like you or I are going to be persuaded by ANYTHING that Sleepy Joe or Kam-Kam have to say, but it's a sign of maturity that we're willing to listen. How many Dems/"progressives" will tune in next week to the RNC? Not many!
ReplyDeleteNo, professors at Alfred State have not been told they must be tested. Maybe if they're declared a "contact"? We have to certify that we're symptom-free via an app whenever we come to work. Strangely enough, we're not even required to wear masks in the classroom, provided we're behind the mother of all sneeze guards. Personally, I'm glad I'll be teaching remotely, because I would have hated to wear a mask, and I would have hated not to, simply because the students are being forced to comply. Dilemma averted.
Ray, I think most people have always let their emotions lead them when it comes to politics. My view: we all let our emotions lead us most of the time, even when it appears we're being "rational". And I agree that most people haven't a clue what the "worst case scenario" is, politically. That's why so many people can be convinced that Trump=Hitler. It's because they haven't the faintest clue what a real dictatorship looks like.
As for the end times, I guess my perspective is that we're all going to be pushing up daisies soon anyway, so we better hope that God will have mercy on our souls, because otherwise eternity is going to be mighty bleak.
Linda, I think we are only beginning to see the pain that the pandemic recession will inflict on the states that shut down early and often, like NY. Assuming no massive federal bailout, services WILL be cut, and taxes WILL be raised. And the economic climate was already pretty bad!
Jack, it seems to me that the assault on the NRA, which is really an assault on free speech and democracy itself, could be used to great advantage by the forces of light this November (to borrow a phrase from Sleepy Joe). Suing the NRA is one thing -- trying to disband it strikes me as a bridge WAY too far. "Cancel culture" is scary to almost everyone, except the hardcore Stalinists. Let's talk it up!!!
Dr. Waddy, I am glad to hear this...although, I do have concerns about the remote teaching issue, that is another topic. I am afraid, the prospect of taxes going up because of Cuomo and his asinine mandates are real, my mother in-laws property taxes are up 150%, yes, you read that. Just because our area is expected to NOT get federal funding. Frankly, we are at loss on how to handle this. I suppose it helps to know we are not the only ones in this predicament.
ReplyDeleteLinda, it's true -- there's safety in numbers. Because the pandemic and the recession are so widespread, there's a decent chance of a bailout. Then again, it's more likely BEFORE the election than afterwards. After we've voted, and especially if there's gridlock, our elected representatives don't have quite so much reason to throw money at us... My guess is there WILL BE federal assistance, but not enough to obviate the need for higher taxes and service cuts.
ReplyDeleteDr.Waddy et al: Agreed, agreed, let's talk up the American taliban's clear conviction that it is time for them to be completely open!Oh yes, they do see they must dojust a little more "fronting" but that a decisive faction of America now supports their open attacks on all we cherish. I think that, due to their incalculably painful rejection of their final VICTORY celebration in 2016 and their conviction that this was a bizarre detour from reality they believe their time has belatedly arrived ( and for which insolent 2016 obstruction, requisite punishment will be administered, to sweeten the pot that is). Bottom line? For most Americans: a political faction essentially contemptuous of your views, your lifestyle, your religious choices, your well being earned through positive, productive enterprise and effort, actually expects your support in election in a vote for a weak willed apologist for anything dictated to him by radical leftist handlers and guaranteed attempted enactment by hisfar leftist temporary "running mate" of incipiently totalitarian policies like "affimative action" in all of public and private life(if, that is, the latter is "allowed").
